96 LT4 Corvette M6

A guy I work with has two ( 2 ) M6 Transmissions that came out of his 96 LT4 Corvette.
Will they fit our cars?
He said one has the main shaft bent (Good For Parts) or a new main shaft...
And the other one is in great shape.

Anyone know anything???

Thanks,
Michael

That's a ZF tranny, not the BW or Tremec used in these cars.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think so. If I remeber right, the vette used the ZF transmission then, while the f-bodys used a tremec/borg warner.

That's exactly right. The C4 vette from 92-96, and maybe 91, used the ZF6 tranny, whilst the F-body from 93+ uses the Borg Warner/Tremec.

Fastbird is correct. The vette used the ZF6 transmission from 1989 to 1996. Its a pretty good unit and will hold up very well. You just dont want to break one...big bucks to fix.

unless there is a way to fab up a tranny mount no it will not fit. C4 vettes use a driveline bridge to connect the tranny to the rearend. it looks like a really big and hefty troque arm. thats the only thing supporting the rear of the tranny. our cars have a mount that goes across from side to side. ive never heard of someone making one work simply becuase the tranny in our cars isnt bad and has similar gear ratios too i believe. I don't know about that, but I believe there are more than a few guys running the zf in 3rd gens. You might want to put a post there, and see how different it would be in a 4th gen.

TA Dreaming is right. But IMHO the hardest part would be the torque arm. Because in C4s it is backwords compared to our cars.

There are a few. Why? I'm not sure, probably got a hell of a deal somehow. Just look at the T56, it's cheap (relatively) and proven. It's the tranny of choice for the new Mustang Cobra, Viper, 'Vette, and former F-bodies. Hell, Taner is in the nines with his Although somewhere in the tens is probably more realistic for most.

The ZF tranny is rather pricey and there's nothing real noteworthy about it. FWIW, I believe the ZF and T56 trannies are different lengths, which might be troublesome if for some reason you were trying to install one in a fourth gen and as already mentioned the proper TA mounts are not present in the right place.

Has anyone ever driven a C4 with the ZF6 though? That think is smooth at butter, and feels way more refined than the T-56. The T-56 is notchy going into gear while the ZF6 is just smooth and fast.

Being a bit notchy is a side affect from being built like a brick s***house... I gladly accept the tradeoff

I used to own a '96 LT4 C4 with the 6 speed. The transmission does shift pretty smooth (very rarely missed a shift), but I found it a lot noisier cruising than the T56 in my Z28. From what I understand, the ZF6 has straight cut gears.

I miss that car very much
