96-97 opti. Is it kinda like a crank trigger???

Since the last years of opti sparks put the crank position sensor in the timing chain cover, does it act as a sorta crank trigger. Meaning If I advance or retard the cam any the PCM still know where the crank and Pistons are at all time. BEcause the previous opti's read the crank postion from where the cam is. Right? I am currently converting a 93 to a vented opti. For RACE only conditions. I am trying to find out if I should go to a 95 or to the newest opti system. I also am going to want to advance the timing on my cam. I don't want to make the PCM(I run DFI gen 6) crazy.

One last thing. If I were to go to a full blown crank trigger system, how do that hook up or can someone point me in the right direction.

Thanks,
Ken

All optis operate the same. The added crank position sensor has nothing to do with spark delivery-it's just a monitor for misfires.

If your setup is race only, I don't see the reason to change to a vented Opti. Rather, if your running a DFI system. I would modify the stock intake to accept a distributor in the stock gen I location. You would be able to chancge your cam timming without freaking out the DFI and you would also have a more reliable ignition system.

The reason I am going to a vented is to get away with the LT1 timing chains that run from 280.00 to 500.00. If I change to the new style I can run a std small block chevy chain set which are about 80.00 for a dual roller. I know, I already have a electric water pump. I am just trying to figure out the whole moving the cam and not making the PCM crazy. I know it sounds like alot of work just for a timing chain but I think it would be more benificial in the long run.
I have thought about dropping a dist in but then it wouldn't be the way LT1's came. I don't feel that my setup is ready for that yet.

Can you correct the timming error through the DFI?

I think so. What I have been told is that I will have to retard the ignition timing to make up for the advance cam timing. I am going to first tune the car on a dyno. We'll see what happens.
