Question 95Z Fuel Delivery Prob????

About a 2 weeks ago, I noticed a slight missfire around 2000 rpm, this got worse, so I replaced the wires and whoala, no probs for a week. Then I started having hesitation after 3000 rpm, would go away at WOT, and ran fine at low rpm, this was on and off. Changed the fuel filter and problem disappeared for a day and a half, then two days ago she left me stranded. Went to give it gas and it stalled. It was very hard to start, but did, although it was idling at 800 rpm, and would not respond to the gas pedal. Ended up pushin. So I let it sit for a couple hours and put a couple gallons of gas in it. It started up fine, I drove it through the parking lot, and was about to pull out and it bogged down when I gave it gas. I stopped and reved it up a little and made the mad dash home, it seemed like there was no prob at higher rpm. So yesterday, I hooked up a fuel pressure gauge to it. At first (when cold) it was about 21 psi and pressure dropped about 5 when I opened the throttle, but engine seemed normal. After it got warm, pressure went to 35, and increased to 40 when throttle open. Engine is running completely normal at this point. Then I shut it off. and it almost didn't start. It came on hesitated a lot, and then reved back up to 1000. Unfortunately, I was not looking at the guage durring this. But after I shut it off and started it again, the pressure dropped when I gave it gas.

No one seems to know what the problem is, so any suggestions are welcome. Thanks for your input.

Sounds like an intermittent pump, or regulator. Sorry I couldn't be more precise, know anyone you can swap a known good regulator with?

Sounds like the regulator or pump, more than likely the pump.

I've gone into the tank by lowering the rear and dropping the tank, the second time i went into the tank I cut an access hole, pics in my sig.....I would recommend the access hole, much easier and makes it easier if you have to get in there again down the road.

How risky is it cutting the access hole? I saw one walk through for it, but its not as in depth as I would like.... Do you think that some one at a shop would do it, or is there too much liability?

you'll have to talk to the shop to see if they'll do it. It's not like the tank is right against the rear deck though.

Good news and bad....

My mechanic says that there is NO POSSIBLE way that its the fuel pump or regulator....

Unfortunately, he cannot get it to repeat the low idle or stalling problem.

Any more suggestions???

Solution (I HOPEIII)

Okay, so car finally acted up for my mechanic, and what do you know, it lost all fuel pressure... Replaced the fuel pump today 550 parts and labor to do it the right way with no holes in the trunk. Car feels amazing, prolly cuz the rear ends all snug now. Taking a 3 hour drive with it tomorrow, so hopefully no horror stories.

Right on, glad to hear you got it working! I was curious how he determined it wasn't a pump or regulator, when fuel pressure was falling.
