95 Z just shuts off.......Help

While driving down the road my sons 1995 Z sometimes just shuts off. It will crank but will not fire-up. Fuel pump is running. Dry road condition. Have reseated all electrical plugs and coil wire. With car running I have jiggeled all wires and ignition key. After waiting 15 or so minutes it will start-up and run fine. Any ideas? Update: Changed ICM last night. Drove 15 miles and car died. Waited 15 minutes and car started up. Drove it home. Help

What is it missing when it won't start? Spark? Injector pulse? Fuel pressure?

Start with the basics 1) scan it for codes; 2) check the fuel pressure.

The fact that the pump is running does not mean it's supplying adequate pressure. It could be a problem with heat soak of the electric fuel pump, heat soak of the optical cam sensor module in the Optispark distributor.

There are "fatal" codes that will shut down the engine, but do not turn on the SES light.

Our 94 Z28 did this and it was the ignition switch. The guy changed it without taking the steering column out. Good Luck

I had this happen to me once.

Check your electrical wires around the coil. They're in an area more likely to be damaged than others. I had a small cut in the orange wire leading into the ignition coil plug, caused the car to shut on and off. Took awhile for me to figure it out but I'm glad my car hasn't shut off again in the middle of I-95 heading into Philadelphia!!!

I had this happen too. It turned out to be the distributor. I made the mistake of adding an ignition box with the stock distributor and it didn't last long. Changed the ICM and coil then checked fuel pressure while driving to narrow it down.

Re: 95 Z just shuts off.......Help

Update: changed ICM, coil and relocated away from head, no help. Drove 15 minutes car died. Waited 5 min. started up ran fine. Changed O2 sensors. Car ran in driveway in closed loop for 15 min., car died. Shot a bit of starting fluid in opti vent tube. Car tried to start. Pulled fuel line off turned key on and fuel came out. Put back together and car started and ran over 25 minutes and I shut the car off. So I don't know if pulling the fuel line off did something or if the required 5 minutes had elapsed for it to start.

The problem is wierd because the car runs great for 15 minutes and dies. Then after 5 minutes the car starts up and runs great.

I'm opened to any help

Has the VATS been ruled out?
Especially the 5 min and it starts again. If you try to restart multiple times in that 5 min and that doesn't reset the clock before it starts again, then its probably not the VATS.
Any signs that that the Security Alert is triggred?
