95 OBDI ECM with OBDII

Yea, its retarded, and my car is running horribly. However, even though its an OBDI car with an OBDII connector under the dash.... what does that mean? Does it mean the ECM speaks in OBDII language so that I have to use an OBDII scanner? Or do i have to use an OBDI scanner with some funky special GM adapter? Or do I have to use an OBDII scanner that can read OBDI codes/systems as well?

WHY DID THEY MAKE IT LIKE THSI?

Never mind why they did it, they just did. Use an OBD-I scanner with a special cable (scanner makers know about it and make the cable) to connect it or adapt a 12 pin cable like this.

Welcome to the LT1 world.

Exactly as you stated, you have to have a special adapter and a scan tool that will read the OBD1 cars. The pin-jumper type of code reader will not work. I purchased one from Auto X Ray from the local Kragen that will scan not only the Camaro but the rest of the vehicles I own (and most of neighbors and family's). It has more than paid for itself with the amount of use it has gotten. Long gone are the days of the SBC with a 750 Holley on top and tuning it by ear with a screwdriver (at least for the daily driver).
Now the short version....
The computer speaks OBD1. The connector is OBD2. Either get a good scan tool or a cable from AKM and Freescan.

Because it's a transition year. The 94-95 vettes and 95 F-bodies implemented some OBD-2 functionality.

For your purposes, it's just an OBD-1 computer with a different plug.

Thanks for the responces

It has been stumbling a lot, missing in a lot of different circumstances. Like when opening the throttle under normal acceleration itl stumble. Even at cruising speeds, cylinders will start dropping out and i'll have to play with the throttle a little to get it hitting on all 8 again.

It will run fine when it is dead cold, but as soon as some heat builds up in the block, itl start acting up.

If i pull the TPS connector, it will run a lot better, but still have problems (forcing open loop). It has new O2 sensors, only a few months old.

Before the car got this bad, i noticed a lot of pinging/knocking? at WOT 4k+ rpm and loss of power.

Already have had the cat replaced in the spring. Fuel pressure checks out ok, car has 124k on it, unknown milage on the optispark.

I also believe the car is down on power compared to when i first got it a year ago, just doesn't feel right.

what a nightmare of a car so far
