Re: 95 LT1 smoking out pass. valve cover

I am leaning more towards building an engine. I asked about it above, if anyone can give me info on that. I dont havr specialty tools and work outside in a stone driveway. I did change head gaskets myself so i wonder if maybe i can build an engine i just dont wanna get in over my head because i cant afford for it not to run when its done.

That's a lot of smoke alright. Here's what the stock pistons look like when the rings and lands break

is that what you would say is wrong? Time for a rebuild....? one thing that seems wierd to me is that there is absolutly no smoke out exhaust.

Re: 95 LT1 smoking out pass. valve cover

Mine didn't smoke out of the exhaust until the head gasket went. It actually ran pretty good for more than a year having a broken piston. I think I had one damaged piston for a long time, then busted the second one at the track and took out the head gasket at the same time, and the antifreeze got into the oil and the compression got into the radiator. At that point, it wasn't very driveable and got towed home.

Did yours puff and smoke out the valve cover? In your honest opinion do you think it's time for a rebuild?

did you notice the smoke comming out of the dipstick tube also? so im assuming there is smoke above and below the pistons

It was puffing from the valve cover, I don't know about the dipstick tube - I never pulled out the dipstick while it was running. The smoke you are seeing is from the crankcase - it is getting past the rings. It sure seems like you have a broken piston, but if you want to be dead sure, you can always do a compression test or a leakdown test. If I remember correctly, I think I broke #1 and #7 and I think others have lost those pistons as well. You might want to check those first. You can even just drop those cylinders out by disconnecting the injectors at idle and see how much the rpms go down as compared to other cylinders when you disable them. Usually, if you have a dead cylinder, it won't affect the rpm as much as disconnecting a healthy one. A bad cylinder might make OK compression at a faster engine speed, but at idle, they are probably bleeding off more of the compression.
