95 LT1 - Crank position plate?

Getting ready to put my timing cover back on, noticed the crank position plate in my pile of parts..

I was under the impression that only the 96+ LT1's had a crank position sensor? are these two things unrelated?

If i do need it, how should it be installed? it has a key slot, but the key is back in too far in with the crank timing cog to be used with this...Anyone help me out?

Thanks

You should not have a crank position sensor on a 1995. Maybe someone swapped the hubs and threw it in as a spacer?

I was told the car had a "new engine" installed that was 30k old when i bought it, so maybe it had a shortblock of a 96+ LT1 put in?

The car dosent have the sensor itself, just the plate that rides infront of the crankshaft timing gear.

I guess i wont be putting it back on, thanks shoebox

I don't know if I understand the situation. Did you get the car with the engine apart or did you have it running and take it apart? If it had the reluctor in there, then maybe it also has a 96 hub that matches it. Do you have a 95 hub if you don't use the reluctor?

I got the car with the engine intact and it ran fine for about 5k miles or so, then got a bad miss...at which point i decided to do my cam and header install. I found the miss, which was a rocker off the valve.

When i pulled the timing cover the crank position plate was on the crank shaft infront of the timing gear, I dont know how it stayed on since it had no key holding it and was just loose in there.

I dont know the difference between a 95 and 96+ crank hub, but mine is identical to

this diagram

but with the crank position plate thrown in there. My timing cover has no sensor on it, which is where the CPS is i would imagine?

What im guessing happened is, the original engine blew/burnt/god knows what and the guy bought another LT1/shortblock from a 96+ and had it put in.

If it was on there before, I would put it back on. The hub that is on it probably goes with the reluctor. Since you are not using the cps, it does not matter if the reluctor stays keyed at one position. It is merely sandwiched by the gear and hub to make the spacing correct.

So what your saying is if the car has a 96+ crank it needs the plate for spacing purposes...so even if its not used with my 95 timing cover, i should keep it to insure the spacing is correct.

Gotcha, thanks shoebox

It's not the crank, it's the hub that is a different length. The hubs used on cars without the CPS are longer, because there is no reluctor taking up space before the crank gear.

I'm using a 97 crank in my engine with the original 95 hub (no reluctor).

anyone have a measurement on the 95 crank hub? or are there any differences i could check for?

I guess it worked with it in there before, so i might as well just leave good enough alone.
