95 crank hub on a 96 LTX

Well finally my LT4 crate is on the way home I ve order a truck load of parts/gasket/sensor with it so i wont miss nothing.

The only small question remaining is the hub part...

The 93 to 95 f-body use a long type crank hub and the 96/97 use the shorter one to make place for the crank sensor reluctor.(correct me if im wrong.

Since i never saw how a 96/97 timing coiver look,i dont know where is the crank sensor reluctor(inside the cover or outside the cover

My car is an obd1(1995) and of course i will not use the crank sensor reluctor.

So is my 95 longue type crank hub will fit without any problem or i need the shorter one?

Thanks

The reluctor gear is sandwiched between the hub and timing crank gear (hence the reason for the different lengths between the two you've mentioned). Using a '95 hub will be fine.

If the LT4 crate motor has a reluctor gear installed he should really pull it off before using his 95 crank hub or the thing will become a belt throwing machine IMO.

Since the motor is still in the delevery truck somewhere ,does someone know if a GM crate motor come with this sensor?

If it come with it i should see it?Hard to pull it off?

I always thought that a crate engine include no accessories or sensor

You will also have to either change the crank key, or modify the one you have to work with the longer hub.

When I say crank key it is the half moon inserted into the slot on the crank snout that indexes the crank timing gear and the reluctor wheel for the crankshaft postioning sensor. The earlier style is different, if you have the late style and try to install an early style hub it will not go on all the way and stick out almost a 1/4 an inch further.

Ok i ve done some search on the board(yeah my favorite features) and found that the stock crank hub is "press fit" and dont use a key.I also found out that unless your running a supercharger off the front there is no need for a keyed hub.So i dont think that there is any problem here.

Yes, the hub is pressfit, the key is machined specific to allow the hub to rest against teither the crank gear or the crank position hub, hence the shorter hubs on the later cars.

The key does not orientate the hub, but with the wrong key it will hinder it from being fully pressed on.
