94Z A4 transmission slips @ WOT 2/3 rd gear shift

Hello. Was at the track Wednesday night and car was running slow and i thought it may be because the temp was nearing 100 degrees. On the second pass, i knew my theory was false, the car hit the rev limiter on the 2nd to 3rd shift of course at WOT.

The next morning i was driving the car and tried to recreate the slip at least 4 times and the shift hit hard. Later on that day, when it was hotter again, the slip occured again along the same format (90*or so). Car drives perfectly fine when not at WOT but i can see whats going on.

Ive been looking into all of the information on the boards and doing searches for the past 4 hours but im still very very ignorant when it comes to it all.

My original idea was to get a b&m tranny cooler and change fluid and filter but ive heard that can be the worst thing in the world for a weak tranny. .. course others say its a good idea... some say to swap only half... who knows.

Im thinking its gonna need a rebuid but I dont know what that means specifically. I can take the tranny out myself and take it somewhere to have a shop "rebuild it", i can take the car there and let them do it all. Or i can attempt a rebuild by myself but have no prior experience with anything at all

I also know of a guy who has a freshly rebuilt tranny from a 94 A4 t/a. I could buy this from him, and ???sell??? mine. Do people buy trannys that need rebuild? Do companies?

Any insight or tips, hints, tricks.. .what youve done, what you should have done, what you would do in my place kind of thing would be of great help.

Thanks

If you need a rebuild and have the garage space, I would pull the tranny yourself and have it rebuilt. That is what I did. You need a friend to help you cause it is not a one man job. If you have never rebuilt a tranny I suggest you let someone else who knows about transmissions do it. The 4L60E/700R4 is a notoriously hard tranny to build right (just ask some of these guys) and it needs some beefing up to last behind an LT1 making any kind of power.

I would get the largest cooler (GVW rating wise) you can feasibly use. If the transmission works ok till you reach a certain temperature, then try to keep it running as cool as possible to start with. A "modified" Trans-Go Performance Shift kit can help out in this situation. The 3rd gear feed hole in the valve body plate is too small (when stock) to keep this unit alive. There are other modifications, but this is a good starting point.

Mine does the EXACT same thing, I was thinking about changing the fluid first and hoping that helps, and if it hurts it I would need a rebuild anyway. Did you end up doing anything yet?

I had this same problem except mine was doing this at the 1-2 shift. It would hit the rev limiter every time. The only thing I did differently from the time it was shifting good till the time it started hitting the rev limiter is changed my wheel combo. But the tires measured the same height and everything. I eventually changed my shift points with the HPP and even though it didn't wind out as long as I would have liked, it ran faster than it ever has. It was originally shifting at about 6000 and I dropped it to about 5500-5700 and it was turning out quicker et's. It has shifted fine every since.

It won't get better by itself.

Heat makes it slip worse.

Time for a rebuild.

You don't want to do it yourself, trust me...
