94 z28

I went to walmart today a 20 minute drive for a tarp came out to the z28 and fired it up went to the stop sign turned out and it coughed and stumbled like running out of gas i shoved it in nuetral and reved it which it did fine put back in drive and it died. Crank crank crank nothing so got it on the trailer and was at home did nothing to it i jumped in it to let a friend hear it and it fired right up. The more i think about it at walmart when i went to start it i dont remember the fuel pump coming on. Any ideas its kinda got me gun shy now. In the garage now at home the pump comes on. Its a 94 z28 no mods only exhaust and a kill switch so thieves cant steal it on the battery. 126000 miles any ideas would be great thank you

Scan it for codes. Check the fuel pressure under max load.

Re: 94 z28

If you determine it's the Opti and need to replace it, you should not consider any replacement other than the Delco or Delphi unit. I think they run about $350-400. The cheaper aftermarket units often fail right out of the box, or shortly after installation.

But scan it first. The codes are stored for a large number of "drive cycles" before they self-clear. There are codes that do not turn on the SES light. If it was a problem with the fule pump circuit, it will not necessarily set a code. You can bypass the relay and the PCM/security interlocks by powering the pump from the prime connector under the hood near the PCM.

Fred is 100% correct don't fall for the cheap ones you will regret it later! There was a guy selling brand new Delphi optis at the best price I could find anywhere. Next was Summit in as far as price. Bottom line you get what you pay for ;-)

Well, don't go back there...the guy is wrong about not being able to connect unless the light is on. 93 and 94 cars do not have power at the ALDL like later cars do. Scanners for these cars need to be self powered to work. My old snap-on scanner has a lighter plug attachment to work with these situations and it works fine.....

Good luck!

Re: 94 z28

Strictly OBDI code readers and scan tools are getting scarce. You have to get a combo OBDI/II, which is the way to go, as there haven't been any OBDI cars built since '95. Most parts store do not pull codes on OBDI cars.

Re: 94 z28

Found another app ( OBD trouble code look up ) works with OBD 1 & 2
but it does not read the code just tells you what the code means

Re: 94 z28

Shoebox has the best LT1 code list on the planet. Using generic lists is often misleading or unclear.
