93T56 VS 94& up T56

I'm doing a 6speed swap and was planning on using a 93 T56
How much weaker is this trans?
I was told it's a lot weaker than the new ones
Is this a bad idea?

Thanks

I belive the only difference is that the 6th gear is not as deep as the 94+. SO you'll be spinning a few more RPM then the 94+ guys..

Actually, all the ratios except 4th are different in the 93 unit, and to make it more confusing there were two different 1st gear ratios available.
93 F-body Borg Warner T56 6-speed Manual|
Option 1:
Gear Ratios : 3.36, 2.07, 1.35, 1.00, .80, .62
Torque Rating: 350lb-ft
Option 2:
2.97, 2.07, 1.43, 1.00, .80, .62
Torque Rating : 400 lb-ft

94-02 Borg Warner T56 6-speed Manual
Gear Ratios : 2.66, 1.78, 1.30, 1.00, .74, .50
Torque Rating : 450 lb-ft

Just a footnote, the 94-97, 98-99, and 00-02 are actually different units, although I'm not sure exactly what the differences are. They have the same ratios, but I know some of the later units used some weaker parts after the Tremec takeover.

One more reference point, the Z06 M12 ratios are:
2.97 2.07 1.43 1.00 .84 .57

Notice any similarities to second of the 93 T56s? The 1st 3 gears are basically equivalent to a 3.92 rear end with a 94-02 T56, and I really wish GM had kept that tranny as the standard, or at least as an option as it is just about perfect for our cars. Personally, if my tranny ever blows up, I'll try and find one of the 400lb-ft 93 units to replace it. Of course, the 94-97 T56s are pretty much bullet proof, so I doubt that will ever happen.

The 93 M29 T-56 is actually a Viper unit. GM bought a bunch off of Chrysler when Borg Warner didn't have the F-Body spec trannys finished yet.

They're stout. Nuff said!

Mine went boom too, now I have a built 98 unit (had to change input shaft and bell housing), with my 3.42's I like it better than the stock 93 M29

Well I have never heard that the 93 t56's were weaker then the rest, but I don't really care, i have the m29 option which yes fastbird talked about. It's more agressive gearing and a direct viper t56. So I'd say it should handle 450-475 ft # torque, since that is what the older vipers had correct?

Is there any marking or serial number that tells you if you have the M29 option?

It is in the glove box or wherever your standard codes are displayed. The m29 tranny was only available in 1993, on select number of cars, it is a limited make, it was just to use as a " band-aid" to hold GM over to fufill enough six speed models in 1993 to be available to the public. GM only had so many GM t-56 trannys to put in their cars, luckily I got the good one There were two trannys out there in 93, the M28 with the wider gears. and the M29 with the closer ' viper ' gears.

Anyone happen to know any production numbers for M29 cars?? I know there were quite a few, but how many remains to be seen.

If I remember right, the M28 option also got a set of anemic (just kidding) 2:73 gears instead of 3:23's.

Yeah, but it'll be kind of doggish down low.
