Ok, time has came and my tranny had bit the dust with 99k miles on it. Qs is it better to get a 6spd conversion or just spend the money and rebuild my A4 for the price cost???

What does it involve with swapping out an M6??? Price cost, time, PCM, Wiring Harness??? etc... Is it pretty easy to do this on your own???

Would it be better to just sell the car "AS-IS" and for the price difference add a few grand and just get a LS1 as I see these cars go as low as $9k-$13K????? Plus w/ the LS1's out the box theI'm leaning towards the latter as my car is an auto non-ttop car and being a 9yr old car is starting to show the age.

So for you folks out there, if you're on my shoe........ what would it be??? M6 conversation or a bullerproof tranny or just go all out and get an LS1???

 

I'd just buy an used, working A4 (you can find them for 400-500), replace it with the bad one and sell the car. At that mileage, if you keep it any longer, it will be worth just a few grand when you decide to sell it.

 

it depends on what you're really looking for. Don't forget, unless you buy a new M6 or rebuilt M6 and the whole conversion kit, then it is still going to be a used tranny. Like the kit from speed automotive is $1500 and I don't believe that the tranny is rebuilt...I emailed them but they never responded to my emails. I was going to get a M6 for my A4, but I think you have advantages and disadvantages to both. M6=more hp, not as consistent launches and 1/4 times, better gas mileage and I think more fun to drive. A4=less hp, more consistent launches and 1/4 times, and they may not be as fun to drive because you don't get to go through the gears, but you can put it into OD or D and just go...it is all personal. I've seen rebuilds for ~$750-1000 that will handle 450-500hp. If you do a search on this topic...M6 Conversions or M6 vs. A4 you will find all you need to know about what all it takes...some say it is easy some say its a PITA. I've decided to just get mine rebuilt...if I take it out...get it rebuilt...and put it back in myself, then it should only cost around a Grand. Hope this helps out...but for sure do a search.

 

Depends on how long you wanna keep the car. As mentioned ifyou're gonna sell it in the next year or so then put an A4 back in, but if you plan on keeping it for several years I prefer a manual so I'd go with the M6.

 

The M6 conversion looks way too indepth for me... and as mentioned, you are still putting a USED M6 into the car with no guarantee of how long it will go before needing rebuilt... the T-56's are strong, but the synchros are supposedly soft, so you're still looking at parts & labor to rebuild it eventually too....

If you're paying someone to put in the M6, I'd suspect $1500+ in labor alone... if you're doing it yourself, I'd expect 2 weeks downtime minimally unless you have a lift and no job to go to.

I really wanted an M6 car when I got mine, but they're too hard to find for a fair price. I was able to find an A4 for nearly 1/2 the price... I've seen many working used A4 trannies for $400-500 as mentioned, so that might be a good option. On the other hand a good rebuild will last longer and have firmer shifts if you have it done right....
