6 speed growl
The growl all of you are speaking of can't really be fixed. I took my 93 in to a local chevy house where one of my best friends works. He found an interesting article relating to the T56 that stated the design of the gears and other misc. things with the tranny was causing the noise. (pretty much what JohnD said.) I'm sure you can find the article on-line if you searched. So, it is known to GM and there is no real fix for it. Nothing was recomended for it. Pretty much a, "Sorry, but no can do." and I was sent on my way. Kinda fudged up, but I got used to it now and I don't even care anymore.
the noise is normal every 6 speed does it. you guys want to know what it is? its the throwout bearing. im postitive i have talked to sseveral gm techs and they all said it was the throwout bearing even if you have a new one it will start making th enoise in a bout 100 miles or so after you have drivien it. totally normal just annoying and loud. nothing to be afraid of. the throwout bearing usually outlasts the clutch and when you get a new clutch you always should get a new throwout bearing nothing to worry about.
if your foots not on the clutch pedel so its engaged, and you hear noise/rattle its the throwout bearing.
did i read right from someone that they put it in 6th gear at 40 mph?? was that below idle rpm?? i hope i never see the day when i have to do that to conserve gas

You know, I remember someone saying not to use synthetic fluid in the T-56 about a year ago, or whenever we all last had a huge debate about which fluid was the best. I always use Mobil 1 ATF, I would never use anything but sythetic fluids in my T/A's. I've never had a problem using it. I make sure to change it bout once a year, seeing that I don't drive it during the winter. Using the best fluids and changing them often, imo, is what allows me to drive the hell outta the car and have no problems..
And another thing, I've heard to not use sythetic in the rear-end too (heard this AFTER i put it in of course). I've run synthetic in there too for about 2 years with no problem. (?)

I love the fluid debates
just use any brand of the grade GM recommends.
This site refers to the baby rattle, errrrrrr throwout bearing, being a reverse type design(at least compared to the T5) like i mentioned earlier.
