6 speed growl
Hi all once again. Thank you in advance for any info provided! Couple of things here. Stock 96 T/A with a 6 speed, all stock with 80,500 miles.
1. It likes to have a gear growl while at low rpms, torquing its way up the speedo. It is a similar growl to that of a heavy duty truck transmission without synchros! I checked the fluid, level is fine, however is very very dark...you wouldnt know it was ATF. Would a fluid change eliminate this, and how do you drain it seeing as there is a lack of a drain plug, just a filler?
2. Temp runs a bit over the 160 marker while getting plenty of air, however while sitting or stop and go, it QUICKLY gets up to 210, (middle of the guage). Fans seem to work and keep it there in the midrange. Normal operating condition while sitting and stop and go, or possibly stuck open thermostat? Also takes a while for the guage to read when first ran in the morning.
Thank you all once again for any and all info. Take care, and God bless!

If you are talking abotu the little growl at a really low rpm, then i my brother and i have had 4 f bods together and they have all done that........and about the temp, it likes to shoot up until you get a 160 thermostat and or a fan switch.......before i got those i used to turn my heater on at a stop light during the summer to keep the temp down.....

I have that same sound pulling off at low rpm in first, I did have my bearings all replaced in my T56, the tranny guy said it was common, they make that noise. My buddy with an 01 Ram Air M6 has the same sound. I do have a rattling noise though, when I get on it, but he said it is nothing to be worried about, synco rattle
I thought it was a cosmetic noise from a bearing in the clutch assembly because it's a reverse design... maybe someone else can shed some light or do the search, i'm lazy right now
Cousins new vette does it too! just not as loud as mine.

my car does the same thing, if im accelerating from low speed or stop it sounds like the gears are binding. the car doesent pop out of gear or anything, its just an annoying sound, is that a problem? my car is a 95 with 68k miles on it. i was going to change the fluids in the rear end and trans this weekend but if thats not the problem i might hold off til i have more money.
To answer your original questions: 1) Yes, if the trans fluid is dark, (and not cherry red), it's time for a change. There IS a drain plug, it's located on the opposite side of the trans case from the fill plug and, of course, about 3-4 inches lower down. Do yourself a favor and use 4 & 1/2 quarts of Honda, (yes Honda), ATF with Z-1. This ATF was designed for use in Honda's CVT transmissions, and works GREAT in our 6 speeds. It costs about $4/qt. from the Honda dealer. 2) Like someone else said, buy and install a 160 degree thermostat, your car will run better AND cooler.

also wondering about the synthetic. anyone know good fluid to use for the differential?
Redline rear fluid is the best............redline is always the best as far as liquids go....

That noise is from the design of the gears. When gears have a lot of bevel they are less noisy but have more side thrust and less strength. The transmission was designed with strength in mind and less bevel on the gears which makes them noiser-like a truck transmission. I'm running Mobil1 synthetic ATF and it made the rattle even louder, I think it may be a little thinner than regular. Royal Purple has an oil (not ATF) that they reccommend for the M6, has anybody ever used it?
