Auto trans fluids don't come in "weights" like engine oils. You want fluid that's described as a substitute for Dexron III. I was always happy with a regular (non-synthetic) Dexron III fuild in mine, but I guess it won't hurt and may have a little less friction.

Forget that Mobil 1 crap, Castrol, or Dexron III. This is going to sound really wierd, but go to your local Honda dealer, and get yourself 4 quarts of Honda ATF Z1. Go to your local parts store and get a fluid transfer pump, should run you less than 10 bucks. I swear this is the best fluid I have ever used, it shifts so much smoother now. Takes a mile or two to work in, but you can really feel the difference. Your car will take about 3.75 quarts.

The clutch is very allergic to lubricants! You should be sure the clutch discs and flywheel are absolutely free of any oil or grease before installing them. Use acetone or brake cleaner as needed and be sure your hands aren't greasy when handling the friction surfaces. The only thing you need to lubricate are the splines on the tranny input shaft, use only a small amount of high-temp moly grease in the area where the clutch splines ride. Do not glop it on, if it gets onto the friction surfaces you will be taking it apart again to clean it. Also, use some never-seize on the tranny bolts, it will make the next time much more pleasant.

As far as the hydrualic system, I wouldn't bother changing the fluid unless the car is quite old. But you can use any brake fluid as far as I'm concerned. Not too critical as it never gets hot like the brakes.

Honda ATF? Wow never heard of that. Maybe I'll try that when I drop the tranny again.

As for the hydro fluid, It's a DOT 3 or DOT 5 brake fluid, I can't remember off the top of my head sorry

The stuff is amazing. Like I said, it will take a mile or two to really work its way in. If you have an aftermarket shifter, you will really feel a difference. My B&M feels like its mounted in butter. The Z1 stuff is a little more expensive than the Castrol or the DexronIII, its about $5.25 a quart last time I bought some. Let us know what you think of it!

I didn't know you were doing a clutch swap too... be sure to replace the pilot bearing and the throwout bearing while you've got the trans out.

i don't know too much about clutches, but can you replace the throwout bearing and pilot bushing/bearing while the tranny is in? the rear seal on the back of my tranny is leaking so that will be getting replaced too while the clutch comes out but i am not dropping the tranny. thanks
