58mm TB, any downpoints?

Before you flame....

Yes I know the lt1 intake is only 52mm so it's useless, but I was on the market for a 52mm and found a slightly used 58mm for a good price.

So here's my question/s. Do you have to do any modifications to make your car run with a 58MM. Not run to it's potential(such as porting lt1 intake). Yes, I would like to do H/C one day, so the 58mm would eventually come in handy. I was told I needed to be tuned for it or it will cause tranny problems, I already have a tune sent by PCM4LESS that I haven't loaded, I could have a new one made up.

So, to sum it up are there any negative effects from the 58mm TB?

Thanks for your time.

You don't have to but you should port the intake out to accomidate the 58 mm bore. Unless you're getting a real good price on it, I would just stay with the 52mm. The stock TB can handle upwards of 400hp.

you will definately need reprogrammed for the 58mm due to the A4, you may have to adjust the TPS voltage, and you may have to modify the IAC passage on the new TB to get rid a of split BLM problem that is common with a 58mm TB.

you may lose hp/tq because the intake isnt ported (due to the turbulent air)
but there is a guy in my town that has one on his stock unported intake and he hasnt had any problems with it.

does that help?

Hey man, whats up?

IMO, not worth the cash. It'll provide a little more throttle responce down low and thats about all you'll feel. I picked a 52mm up from a friend for 1/2 off when he upgraded to 58mm for no readily available reason.

I had a calculator somewhere which would tell you how much TB you needed, and even with my 355 built, and my heads and cam, 52mm TB is all I'd need.

IMO, go gears first. Get 2 series carrier 3.73's from Strange (same gear set I've got), and then have Beir Bro's install them. Including programming, parts and labor; the 2.73-3.73 swap cost me a little under $500.

Then a Vig 2800 or Yank 3000, and some ET Streets and you'll be set.

Yo Todd. I already talked to you about all the TB ****. I just found a barely used 58mm for 200. Since, I was playing with the idea of getting TB anyway, I was thinking maybe. I don't know if I'm gonna do it or not. I told you I wanna hit 12s without a convertor or gears, I don't think I'm gonna buy either till I see what I run.

200 better spent on other things IMO.

think you would be better off changing the gears. turbulent air flow with the 58 going into the intake manifold.

Without converter or gears? Thats gonna be a feat. Say hello to heads and cam. The best I got without gears/converter was 13.51@102 w/ 1.99 60'. That was on a ultra-nice day and a friend pushing me through the staging lanes, and icing down the intake. I thought I was gonna run a 13.7 that day.
