4th gen owners: the rattle hunt!

Basically I'm trying to track down and eliminate those annoying interior rattles that drive us all crazy. Feel free to post, please be specific on what the rattle is, and what you did to fix it.

Dude...mine drove me crazy for awhile. Sounded like it was coming from the rear. At first thought it was outside but later found out it was the spare tire. I tightened it down and the sound was gone. Check that out.

I have an anouying rattle in the back. It almost sounds like a high pitch metal scraping noise in the back. I traced it down to the fact that my rubber bumpers on my back hatch were not out as far as they needed to be. So once I backed them out a little to put a little bit more tension on the hatch it all stoped. Now they are old and have rotted away and my noise is back so I have to go buy some new ones. Hope this helps.

Good thread. Some of my experience in my fourth gens.I keep all my seat belts fastened when noone else is in the car.
Also subframe connectors usually help quite a bit. Some say shock tower brace helps some too.I plan on shock tower brace and double diamond subframe connectors in my 96 vert in spring.
I notice a rattle on top of dash near air outlet on the 96 plan on taking dash off and seeing what can do there..mabye some dynamat or foam under it or velcro or something. Also have rattle from left side on this plastic piece near top.Doens't rattle on right side so think I can fix it.Otherwise car really don't have that many rattles ..You want rattles drive my 80 for a day!! I have spent lots of time trying to find fix some of those annoying ones.!! I call it my rattle battle..The fourth gen are pretty good.Other ideas are dynamat the whole car..check back speaker grills they were rattling on my 97 or 99 forget which car now.Had a 97 taws6 too.
You can adjust the hatch in back that can help and some guys put bit of masking tape on hatch latch I think.Make sure you check stuff in glove compartment like the puzzle key and check jack and spare or take it out and replace with flatfix and electric pump like I do.Saves weight and one less thing to rattle.
I also have two part key chain so can pop out one part as keys were hitting on column causing a rattle. And every time you get car up on overhead double check to see if anything down there is hitting..exhaust on heat shield,etc..etc..lots of rattles come from under there. And when you take car interior apart for serious stereo or whatever you will find lots of places for rattles like
wires that are loose you can tape /wire tie up ,put dynamat under, etc. My 99 isn't too bad now at all.The 96 has a few and like I said the 80 is a rattle machine. For that car the only solutions seems to be a very loud stereo and open cutouts. But I do have some subframe connectors for that car to install also and am buying new shocks and installing new body bushings and replacing most rotten bushings in the suspension.Weatherstrip is big money it seems for the older cars though.Lets hope the fifth gens are rattle free..they do keep getting better.

Have not read the entire thread but My DMS Subframes took most of the rattles out of my T-Top car.

Thx,
Claude

Unhappy

I had the most irratating rattle ever, and you heard it ALL the time.

It was coming from my driver side door and on closer inspection, I noticed the glue was wearing down that connected the door panel to the inner door. What it sounded like was that noise you get when you run over some pebbles...but it never went away (prob because there were some pebbles in that door

I also have all my seatbelts closed all the time to avoid going insane on the highway.

Currently, I am trying to fix this really annoying rattle and thump that seems to be coming from my rear-end that I only hear when I am turning......

Cool

Well,here goes.
Had a squeek on the pass.side, tracked it to the pass seat belt at the floor.Wrapped bailing wire a couple of turns around it,been good for 5 years now, can't see it as well.
Had another one somewhere in the rear, was the rear seat where the latch connects, wraped electical tape around the connector poles, that sqeek was gone.
Had a sqeek at the hatch(that's a real noticable one),lowered the rear hatch mechanism about a hair or two, fixed that ,but still had a slight sqeek,so I screwed the hex plastic things around and that helped a little, but when I put all purpose greese on those little plastic things, the squeek went away.
Had another squeek when I went around corners, was the coil springs in the rear, shot wd-40 up to the top of each spring, sqeek gone(suppose to use upper coil spring isolators,(rubber),but havn't done this yet).
Dash board sqeeks (from prevuois posts)can be fixed by using felt to separate the plastics, but you may have to keep posting for this one.
Sometimes here sqweeks in the front, going over speed bumps, spray wd-40 on that little rubber thing generously where the shocks(front) are ,btween the two shock bolts.Whew.
There's problably more, but if all else fails,Get the Deep Purple tape,=Highway Star song.Guaranteed to drown out any and everything.Hope this helps someone.My02
