400 Smallblock in 95 Camaro

I am putting a 406 in a 1995 Camaro Z28. I have done searches on this and still don't really know what I can expect to run into.
1. The distributor has to be either the crank style or low profile.
2. The carb and air cleaner may need to be clearanced in the cowl.
3. Wiper motor possibly removed.
4. Walbro pump re-regulated with return,
5. Motor mounts? One post said you use one old style and one new style. Others say to switch to the BMR k-member.
6. Accessory brackets. Will any accessory brackets work on the old block?
7. Starter is different.
Any other help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You might want to ask this question in the Advanced Tech section. Just a thought.

A small cap dist (Mallory Unilight etc) will fit in the rear. Crank trigger with crab cap will also work. All in all, the dist isn't that big a deal.

You ever seen this setup? Aint much room for anything there, especially when you start talking about Holley type carbs with fuel bowls on each end...

3. Wiper motor possibly removed.
Don't know about that one...

4. Walbro pump re-regulated with return
Whatever it takes to get the fuel pressure down to ~7psi.

5. Motor mounts? One post said you use one old style and one new style. Others say to switch to the BMR k-member.
Don't know about the motor mounts but I'd go with the k-member just to avoid any issues. Makes for easier access and more header clearance.

There are companies who make brackets... Street and Performance etc. Which heads were you looking to use?

7. Starter is different.
No big deal. Just use a hi-torque mini starter (Tilton etc) for more clearance.

I may be able to add more later... in a bit of a rush right now.

Thanks for the info so far. The heads are Dart Pro 1 aluminum. Looks like an afb or Edelbrock carb would fit back there, or a holley sideways.

BMR makes a K-member specifically for dropping "old school" SBC's in these cars.

Re: 400 Smallblock in 95 Camaro

Are you all set on the Pro1?

If not you might want to consider an AFR. They do both configurations, so I don't see where they'd have a problem loading a gen1 head and running the LT1 accessory bolt machining operation on it. Check with them and see.

A side-mount Holley is a good idea.... can't say I'm much on messing with metering rods. Might also be able to go with an Edelbrock ProFlo air filter (small triangle) or something offset and recessed.

Yeah, the BMR k-member is the way to go IMO.

Nice jumper cables. What are they on there for? They look a little small.

Re: 400 Smallblock in 95 Camaro

Any distributor will work.Hell, the carb and aircleaner will sit higher than the distributor. I pulled my motor from the bottom, and found there is a bubble in the cowl. I have found that lt-1 heads have a different bolt pattern on the end of the heads, so your acc brackets won't work I'm looking into v-6 brackets, as im told they work. the brackets at street&performance don't appear to work, unless you don't want to have a hood.
I'm using the bmr k-member. it's the only way to go. The only thing i couldn't tell you about is the carb and air cleaner combo, since i'm using a modified ram jet intake.

BMR k member huh? I will check it out. As for the AFR heads, that is a great suggestion, but I have the Darts already. I'm sure I can fashion up some kind of bracket adapter to get the newer style bracket on there.

That is a bad *** setup you got in those pics! Just had to tell ya! I wish I had the $$$ to do that. I'm gonna have to start savin up!! I have 3 350 4 bolt mains with steel cranks sitting in my barn that I have been saving for a future project. That could be what I have been saving for. Is that a Holley Pro-Jection or what kind of EFI is that? Cool whatever it is. What kind of hood you got? That Motor Looks bada$$!

Oh no... not mine. That belongs to Darren Harden. He's running a sb2.2 head conversion on the LT1 block. I hear the thing's a real screamer..... he was trying to sell the engine here a while back.

Now I can tell you this... that intake is the GM 2-piece spyder intake cast for the sb2.2. He has it converted for fuel injection and is using a billet 4bbl throttle body. A number of guys make those... Holley, accel, etc..

Don't know about the hood, sorry.

Chris,

You're just gonna have to play around with things. There are a number of companies making universal brackets. You'll just have to figure out something that'll work for the accessories you want to keep.
