4 bolt mains???

I got a 2-bolt main LT1

I want to make it 4-bolt for my 396 buildup.

The block is already at the shop. What do I need to make it a 4-bolt?

Thanks

4 bolt caps, and some machine work.

Re: 4 bolt mains???

Tell the machine shop "I want 4-bolt mains", specify OEM iron 4-bolt caps or aftermarket steel caps. It's not a DIY job and not cheap either.

And hel'l end up with 4 bolt straight, which is in many cases weaker than 2 bolt mains. A 2 bolt main block converted to 4 bolt splayed with a stronger aftermarket cap is a better choice.

Depends...how much RPM are you going to be spinning at...if its turning over 6500rpm, the go 4 bolt...but the 2 bolt will hold. Its not the power that screws the bottom end...its how fast you turn it that causes it to go out.

The LT1 block is not a gen1 block and was designed with 4 bolts in mind, a good shop might have noticed or known that. That said the stock 2 bolt can hold a lot stud it and it will hold even more, the next logical step is the splayed 4 bolt with aftermarket caps, no sense in paying a premium for the Vette block, when that money could be put instead towards the better aftermarket setup, especially if you are genuinely going to need such a mod.
