4 bolt main cap questions...
I need some 4 bolt caps for a "factory" 4 bolt block.
The prices range from under $100 to over $200 for a set. Are the more expensive ones that much better???? Any suggestions?
I'm going to be running a 4340 crank, JE blower pistons, 14-16 lbs. of boost and ported Canfield heads.
I'm also going to get front and rear caps. Any suggestions there?
Thanks!

This isn't a DIY project. Let a trusted engine builder who has successfully done the conversion handle the job. The cost of the parts is only a small part of the bill. Discuss the relative merits of mild steel caps vs. alloy (8620) caps with your engine builder. If he doesn't have good answers, look around. Align boring and honing will be needed, of course. Some people do a good job, some don't. A bad job (I've seen some) of converting is probably worse than just studding stock caps. Of course, with your boosted power potential, good steel caps are a very good idea.
I haven't seen many steel rear main bearing cap conversions. The GMPP high-end bowtie blocks have 4-bolt 8620 CNC machined rear caps which are very nice. They also have a 4-bolt front cap. To my knowledge GMPP doesn't sell them as replacement parts. Too bad.

Local 396 lt1 done by Tony Bischoff (BES) had both the front and rear 4 bolt caps done on it. The bill wasnt small (think i remember $800+ dollars), but you could call them and check out pricing and parts.
