4-bolt main

I'm supposed to be getting a short block with a 4-bolt main today for the rebuild of my poor SS.

Anyway, I understand the 4-bolt Lt1s were reserved for the vettes, whereas the 2-bolts were for the F-Bodies.

Is there anything I need to be aware of in the transferring of all my stuff from the 2-bolt to the 4-bolt? What about the (2) knock sensors supposed to be on the 4-bolt? Where the hell do they go. I just know of the 1 in the PCM.

Anything else?

Thanks

The blocks are identical except for the main caps. Just install one knock sensor.

Thanks. I will be paying my mech. a little visit this PM, to see if the Short Block arrived and.... to see if I can find out a bit more of what the hell happened.

They probably don't even have the oil pan off yet. That should reveal a lot shouldn't it?

I usually don't get intimidated easily, but I'm always walking on eggs around my mechanic. Has a real ego. I just can't afford to Pi$$ him off. It's not my way, but I guess I'll have to go along with whatever he says happened.

No one is going to admit screwing up, esp. when it involves a few grand in damages.

This is an expensive hobby to be worred about if they do good work or not. Its a buyers market, and you have every right to take it somewhere else.

If your mechanic has an ego, maybe you should bring him down to earth and let him know you'll be towing the car out of there asap. I'd wait until the tow truck shows up so he has no time for retribution. Ask him what the bill is "as it sits" before hand and be done with it.

I know you're right. I searched around quite a bit when I first had work done (1.6rrs) installed. The shop is supposed to have a good rep and they do lots of work on perf. cars, and specialty cars.

The last thing, after the heads and headers, was install of 4.10s. Seem to work fine.

It's just that everyone I tell about the engine going with only 8K, say they can't believe it didn't happen because somebody didn't screw something up.

How many shops/mechanics are going to admit a fu..up? The way I see it. It happened. I didn't do it. So its either, a factory defect or mech error when doing the cam (sev miles ago, or the recent head work and installation.

Well, unfortunately it could have almost anything. I plan on having consitant oil analyises as per Mingame's recommendation. Sounds like a good idea for all of us.

Maybe they slightly knicked a cam bearing or something. Maybe something clogged the oil sytem for half a sec and starved the main bearings. I'm no expert, but I know second guessing "experts" because you can't trust is not fun. I wouldn't have much fun cringing everytime I hit the foot feed.

good luck,
Ryan

Bubba,

I live right across the river from you, in Vancouver. I've been following your post in Adv. Tech and noticed this one as well. I have a fairly well stocked garage/shop up here with air tools, welder etc. My engine picker is sitting in Oregon City right now but I can have it back up here within a couple days. If you can't work things out with your mechanic, you're welcome to come up here and make use of my tools or my hands. I'll have quite a bit of free time as it looks like I'm being laid off (find out tomorrow).

Email or PM me.
