4.10 gear in an A4??

Is a 4.10 gear in a A4 too much gear for my car...just out of curiousity...or would 3.73 be a better choice...I'd like to do the 4.10 but what problems would I maybe run into or any info would be helpful...thanks jason

A 4.10 gear is alot if your car is a daily driver or if you take it out on the highway any. You can run it but if you ever put a power adder on the car you will not want it you will probably end up changing it to a 3.73. So basically if you not driving it much and only drag race it a 4.10 would be ok but in my opinion for the street a 3.73 is the way to go. Just my two cents.

I love my 4.10s. The car runs 2300 RPMs in O/D @ 60 MPH with 26" tall tires. The 4.10's also helped make my stock motored '93 the 9th quickest "bolt-on" LT1 in the country. I've went 12.82 @ 105.9 MPH with a motor that had never had the valve cover off, and I still had exhaust manifolds on it. That was full weight @ 3448#.
I've said it before...I'm glad I didn't go with 3.73's

4.10's rule in a a4!! A buddy of mine run a 12.1 with the head cam combo running 4.10's. He tried the 3.73 and said he would never go back. 9th Fastest bolt-on car in the country? How did we get these results? I can get in the area of a 13.1 and i have alot of bolt ons left to do.

Check out the Jan. 2003 issue of GM High Tech Performance. My name is Frank Cahall. GMHTP did a shootout at Englishtown last year. Cars from all over the country were invited. No internal engine mods (other than 1.6 rockers) or power adders were allowed. We also had to meet a noise decibel level...No open cutouts. Funny thing is, my car has no cutout or 1.6 rockers. I was also one of the few full weight cars there, and one of only 2 still running exhaust manifolds.

My buddy that has a 98 z28 put 4.10 in his A4. The thing ran like a mother ****er! With only a KN, lid, cutout, stock GSC, and the 4.10 the car went a best of 12.7 @ 113 . His best mph was 116 (it was a 14.4 @116, ie horrible launch) ...........LS1 . However I think it would be too much for a daily driver but my buddy didn't mind and his was a daily driver. Why not go for it, be different, but be ready to make the gas station a "hangout".

If you are going to be doing alot of highway driving then a 4:10 is to tall a gear for an A4 IMHO. A freind of mine had 4:10's in his and it was brutal on the highyway.

I run 3.73s and at the time very few mods and ran a 13.6@102.
I had CAI, old Mac catback, and 300+ ignition thats it.
I wonder what I would have run with 4.10s? Would it have been worth the hassles? (it was a daily driver then)

For any of you 410 guys, roughly what rpm's do you pass thru the traps at? Would you still have enough left in 3rd gear if say you were spraying a bit, or would that put you into 4th?

I go through the traps at 5800 RPMs in 3rd gear with 26" tall ET Streets, and 4.10's. I've still got more RPMs and a whole 'nother gear to go.
BTW, I shift the car @ 6000RPMs

I would not consider OD a gear to go into with an 4L60E. Good way to pop it.

If you ever start making serious power, 4.10's are to much unless you start locking the converter in the big end. IMO.

Amen to the voice of reason. When I drag race the OD does not exist as far as I am concerned. I figure a 3.73 is good to 125 mph and if you can hit that you are doing well. These cars with stock heads don't really go past 5700-5800.

Let's divide things up here. First off...Anyone who doubts the usefulness of 4th gear in a drag car needs to get someone who know what their doing build it.
Second...No, they didn't pull the heads, but we did get vacuum checked to make sure the cam was stock.
Third...A stock motored/head LT1 will go 6000 RPMs without a problem.
