396 Lt1
396 Lt1
I have a 69 camaro that i'm doing an LT1 swap right now. For a while i'm going to leave the LT1 stock (till i save up money). I've looked into a few 396 stroker kits, i think it would be cool to build a SS396 clone with a LT1 396. My question is this. I drive my car regularly and would like to continue to do so. Is there anyway i can make it get decent mileage? My goal would be teens in town and 20mpg on the highway. I've talked to a few people and one says he had a 383 that made 465 hp and got high 20mpg. Gonna be a while before i start this buildup but i'm going to try to get as much research done as possible. Also if you know of a good place to look at getting a 396 stroker or even maybe a 383 stroker let me know.
Thanks,
William

I think a 396 with your MPG goals is very doable.

Ok cool i was afraid everyone would be screaming "hell no" and that wasn't what i wanted to hear. And i'm still not sure i can get it done but i'm not going for insane power or insane drag car or anything just a pretty nice, pretty mean if i want it to be street car. Like i said this car will be driven...Alot!
I'll check out the second site, i've been looking around on the first.
Thanks, keep the tips coming.

Perhaps you didn't hear any screams because you're on a fuel injection based motor board.
Anyway, it's been done before so I wouldn't worry about it. Just give one of those shops a call and they'll tell you everything you need to know and also help you choose the right components to match your goals. Of course, proper tuning is also important.

LOL true i do know about it being a fuel injected board but i hear people talking about getting low teens or even single digit with less than the stroker. I know tuning is the key. I'm looking at getting LT1 edit when i do do all of this and trying to learn as much as i can. I just like the idea of 396 SS clone LOL. Parts add up quickly i'm looking already around 5 grand and that's not even close to everything and no machine work! Better get off this board and get my *** to work! Does anyone have any desktop dyno files for LT1 and setups on LT1's? I know those aren't perfectly accurate but it will give me something to play with in the mean time.

What kind of heads do you think i should look for? I'm new to LT1s in a big way...Just picked up the 94 that's donating it's driveline for the 69 for 1300 bucks. I've heard of people having the factory ones ported and heard a little about AFR 210's etc... but what else is out there and what all do the AFR's have to offer?

Throw out ideas. I'm not wanting to go all out really but i'm willing to spend for nice stuff...I'm not sure what HP goal i'm looking at, i'm just wanting a pretty nice driver that wont break down if i decide to run it hard (strong parts) and want the gas mileage i said above. I would like to see 500hp but not sure how high to expect from these LT1's.
