396 or 383 which one and why?

I want to build a 383 stroker or a 396 stroker. How much more power does a 396 have over a 383. What other modifications do I have to get done with a 396 compared to a 383. Would a 396 be less strong because of the block being bored out more?

a 383 and 396 will have the same bore. Whats different between the two is the stroke which is determined by the crank shaft. you will see modest power increases going with the extra displacement, but whats more important is that it will shift your whole powerband down and you will get more torque and an earlier HP peak. Much more usable.

There is some extra clearancing that has to be done for the 396's crank shaft.

So basically the only difference I would have to do is get the block to be able to handle the 396..but wouldn't I have to do this anyways for a 383 so it shouldn't be that much more in cost......

So 396 would get more power faster.......
what type of difference and would it be worth it if I was going to put a blower or nitrous shot on there?

what about a 4.000 stroke...what is that like 405 stroker or something...and is all I wuld have to do is get the crank to fit as far as other things I have to do compared to 396 and 383?

My vote goes for the 383, heres why.

(usually) the 383 will be cheaper, Depending on what kind of parts you buy. Both Motors will give more torque but the 396 USUALLY cost more cuz of the extra machine work plus the availability of parts. If money is NOT and Issue, Go with the 396.

Thanks,
Claude

Thanks....

I have decided to go with the 383 all 4340 forged internals with a supercharger running at 12-14

I want a car that I can drive around about 100 or so miles a week
Not Daily driven but on weekends. But I want to be able to eat anything on the road...
Interals
4340 forged 383 Triton Crank
4340 forged H-beam Rods
Pistons....*taking suggestions*
Supercharger...taking suggestions <-----(looks nice under the hood)

Especially since you want to use a blower I would go with a 383...probably a 5.7" rod also.

I dont think 13 extra cubes is worth all the extra money and hassle you could run into. Im a big cost/benefit guy(mainly b/c Im in college) and it doesnt seem reasonable to me.

Id put the extra money you would have put into 13 more ci into your heads where the power really is.

Gas mileage too, if you drive it during the week, youll have to fill up 3 times to go those 100 miles (slight exaggeration).

Dont know anything about this, but some guy on here, forget who, has a turbo and he DESTROKED the motor. Im guessing this is so it can rev higher and be stronger maybe?????

I would suggest that you go with JE/SRP pistons 31cc to achieve appr 9:1 compression with stock 58cc Lt1 Heads. You can get them at Internet Racing Supply.

And as for a Supercharger, I would recommend getting a D1 Procharger and Intercooler from ATI. Lonnie Patvis is the BEST (ATI Distributor/Dealer) for pricing and is Technical support is UNMATCHED in the industry. I bought my P1SC Procharger from him. Check out his website:

Hope that Helps,
Claude

Talking

Do you have to worry about smog? From what I've heard, the larger cubic inch motors tend to draw more fuel as well as hide HCs in the edge of the chamber.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I believe the JE/SRP pistons are dishtop to lower the compression compared to stock LT1 pistons with only the vavle relief design....

Am I right?
