383 stroker questions

I have a professionaly built 383 stroker LT1 that I recently acquired and I'm in the process of installing a new oil pump and a Canton road race oil pan.

When I removed the stock oil pan I noticed right away that stock LT1 windage tray was missing. Is there clearance issues with the 383 and the stock windage tray that prohibits it uses on a stroker engine? I'm thinking the integral windage screen in the Canton oil pan will probably supplant the need for the stock windage tray?

Also, what oil pump are folks using? I think I want to go with the Melling M55A standard volume / high pressure unit.

This engine will be used in a club racer ITE '94 Z28.

Thanks

I'm running a high volume pump from auto zone, and a 20-020 pick up from Canton.

Re: 383 stroker questions

I just ordered the canton 15-242t pan, and used the 01-010 pickup for my melling m55a pump. From what I have heard, the h/v pump is only needed on big blocks, and when used on a small block is a waste and an added drag on your cam, cuz that much oil is not needed. But, I am not an engine god, so don't take it as gospel. I am extremely **** about my car, and everyone I talked to who does build engines for a living told me that. So, you can do as I did, or do your own pavement pounding. I found that actually calling local machine shops who have to warrenty their word give you the best info on that!

On my first LT1 stroker I forgot to remove the stock windage tray of my off my 350 engine and put it on the new one. Most likely this is the same case or reason. It should be on there. I don't know if it poses a clearance issue because the motor (383) was reassembled without the part.

Re: 383 stroker questions

the first time I did it, the 3.75 stroke worked fine with the stock windage tray. I only took it off cuz I went with ARP studs, and the canton pan with all the bells and whistles alread welded in it!

Re: 383 stroker questions

Thanks for the feedback!

I ordered up a M-155 pump with a high pressure 65 psi spring, and the Canton 20-013 3/4" pickup (welded on) from Dave at Canton today.

My engine has the ARP main cap bolts and I'm guessing thats why the stock windage tray was not used.
