383 Stroker Kit Help Please
383 Stroker Kit Help Please
Okay Im sick of not being able to drive my camaro, think I spun a rod bearing back in december so I pulled it off the road, long story short, its time for a 383 stroker, what do I need that I dont already have(by what you read below) what would you recomend, Im not a millionaire so Im not trying to go all out here but I want it done right, I plan on having a local shop JB's machine shop do my work(any suggestions or bad reps about the place please tell me), what crankshaft, rods, bearings, pistons whatever needed would you recomend to me? Thinking of doing a six speed swap while Im at it, what you think?
Buy a partial. If you do it the other way, you will be sorry in the end

Go ahead and price out the parts, the labor and the head ache of building it from scratch. It's a cheaper alternative. Don't care what a shop says, they won't stand behind a failure. Never heard one doing it accept maybe Jasper.

The clutches in these vehicles are a nightmare due to such a short throw, best to stay away.

FYI- a decent crank will run you $800+, rods $500+, pistons $500+, bearings/gaskets/plugs $250- plus probably another $1500-2k in machine shop labor. After doing it myself I would recommend getting a short block- its a lot easier to do without having to try and figure out all the parts and make sure everything is compatible. I bought parts as I had money, then put it all together.
Re: 383 Stroker Kit Help Please
Doing a 383 probably won't be worth your while unless you plan on significantly upgrading the cylinder heads, cam, and valvetrain. A close-to-stock forged 355 is probably more in your ballpark.
Re: 383 Stroker Kit Help Please
Thanks for the replies guys I really appreciate it, Ive already had a 355 ran good but I want something that stands out I want something that is really gonna go and I know you can do it with a 355 but if I spun a rod bearing then Im probabaly gonna have to reoplace my crank etc so I thought I might as well go 383 while Im at it. Any part numbers you can recommend, Im really bad at knowing whats conmpatible with what.
Re: 383 Stroker Kit Help Please
I would start by having a local machine-shop price everything out for you. Let them spec the parts.
OR, AI provides a few matched 383 kits. Might want to check them out.
