383 running really hot!!

i was going to the beach on saturday on the freeway and i noticed that the temp was going up and up. my car usaually runs about 170-175. it got to 210 and i decided to get off the freeway and stop somewhere. by the time i got to the next exit and parked, it had reached 228 on the scanmaster. i wired the fans so that they're always on and they were on. i have a new waterpump. coolant level is good.

i checked under the car for any leaks and found oil dripping down the opti and waterpump. i took the intake elbow off and didnt see anything from the top. the vent holes on the bottom off the opti are covered in oil. where is the oil coming from? what should i do? im not driving the car until i get it fixed.

2 possibilities.....optispark seal or the waterpump seal. They are both on the timing cover. As for the car runing hot...is the waterpump leaking? Do you have a electirc one or stock?

How long have you had it back together? I say that cause I swapped up two of the coolant lines and it would be fine while sitting still then one I started driving it would start heating up... never got over 210 or so, but it took it 300-400 miles to even start doing it.

I dunno I was out to sea when the problem was found.... I think my cuz said he found the return line to the radiator, and the return line to the throttle body switched.. I could be wrong though. I'd have to get him to show me.

just the seals...advance auto has the kit. Just ask for timing cover gasket kit....all the seals will be in it.

Your motor is still fairly new, and you must have just started getting into warmer weather. remember everything is still fairly tight. You might have to wait until around 1000 miles before the car runs at normal temps again.

Check and see if you sucked a bag up the radiator intake area. Oh, you do have the air dam in place right?

Whats your timing curve? If it is low on timing it will heat a lil.

thats what the owner of the shop that built my 383 said.

thats the first thing i checked. it happened to me once already. i do have the air dam.

i dont know how the curve is or how to check it but it is showing 5 degrees of knock retard. i dont know whats causing it. it did it even when the temperature was always low.

for some reason, it cools down at red lights and heats up when im moving. i turned on the heater today and pointed the vents away from me and it didnt go over 180 so i dont know why it heats up with the heater off.

My friend had this problem with his 3rd gen Camaro. It would heat up while it was moving, but cool down really quickly when it stopped moving. Turns out he had the fans wired backwards so they were pushing when they should have been pulling.

Try wiring the fans normally and let the pcm contol them and see what happens.....I know on some cars the fans running actually cool less at highway speeds than the incoming forced air.
