383 kit, Where to get and what brand?
Re: 383 kit, Where to get and what brand?
I didnt buy a kit, I just pieced mine together and saved a few hundred. Before you buy a kit you need to decide a few things:
1) Is this a street or strip car?
2) Are you going to run n2o or forced Ind.?
3) What kind of power are you shooting for?
You can spend way more than you need buying bulletproof parts that you dont need. However, you can also go cheap and spray it and throw a few grand out the window. After you figure out what you want I would contact your local machine shop or one of the sponsors on here to discuss your set up and what not. You can buy a kit from pretty much any where (summit, jegs, Thunder...) it is far more important that you reasearch the compatiblilty of the parts then order instead of ordering and spending the next year wishing you had done more research. Good luck with the build up.

Brian at www.adperformance.com has killer prices. Give him a call!
Re: 383 kit, Where to get and what brand?
well its street, probably once a weekend, gotta be smogable, and its probably not forced induction, definatly not sprayed...
so perhaps i might supercharge but im against that idea at the moment.
but im shooting for 450+ hp at the wheels...

The stock heads can be ported to make some very good numbers, but with your goal lt4 is better. If I could do it all over again I would keep all forged bottom end, but go with a set of bare lt4 heads from afr and have lloyd build them and have a custom cam ground. As far as where to buy parts from you're gonna need to do some research. Whatever you are planning on spending on this you might as well double that estimate, because when all is said and done thats about how much its gonna really cost. Good luck, hope this helps.
Re: 383 kit, Where to get and what brand?
I second the research before you buy. Its a sizeable investment and you only want to do it once.
I plan on doing the same, 383 buildup but I already have an LT1 intake plumbed with a direct port setup. I plan on spraying a 250 shot with a progressive controller so thats going to dictate my bottom end and since mine is going to be a ragged edge street strip car I am taking my time so I only have to do it once. (I hope) take your time and research all your options and be honest with yourself about what you will be doing with the car.
Gofaststuff.com has some nice reciprocating assemblies for a good price so check them out as well.

I really doubt you will get 450+ RWHP out of a smog legal motor N/A motor. Its pretty hard (very expensive) to get that kind of horsepower out of a non-emmision N/A motor. You will be limit to how wild you can go and still pass the smog test. If I were you I would either build a supercharged 355 or build a builtproof 383 with about 360-370 RWHP that is very street and smog friendly then spray the hell out of it at the track.
Re: 383 kit, Where to get and what brand?
Ahhh theres the rub!
What about an LT4 is that smog legal?
i know summit has a LT4 conversion that is good for 425 hp, but if i stroke that out 383 i figure about 470 hp... but... im a newbie in this feild and most the people on here know a tremendous more then i on engine development

Re: 383 kit, Where to get and what brand?
That LT4 kit will give about 340 RWHP ( the numbers given are flywheel HP) and increasing the stroke on that will not help because it wont provide enough flow to help the new found cubes help out. I would contact Lloyd Elliot and have him port your heads. He does very good work, I am very satisfied with mine. It will be hard to find a cam that will make good power and keep you emmisions legal. You would be better off making the extra power via nitrous.
Re: 383 kit, Where to get and what brand?
nitrus isnt street legal either, and i dont inted to goto the track to enjoy my ride...
Nitrous is not an option for me and it won't be for any car i drive.
but, should I get a good combo that is streetable i'll most likely take it without regaurds to cost.

Re: 383 kit, Where to get and what brand?
My point with the nitrious motor is that you can pass the smog with it and you wont be able to with a simular HP N/A motor. I would look into forced induciton then because you should be able to pass smog on a mild FI motor and you can always have a different pulley for all the time and turn it down when its time to pass the sniffer.
Re: 383 kit, Where to get and what brand?
this is also a consideration on my mind.
can you have a cam in an engine that doesnt produce much power like the stock one, in a bigger cubed lt4 still pass emissions?

Re: 383 kit, Where to get and what brand?
A hotcammed LT4 would pass emmisions but you wont even be close to the power range you wanted. There would be no reason to make a 383 at that power level. If you put unported heads on a 383 you will choke it off when it gets up in the power band and never make good power. I still think that a procharged 355 or 383 would be best in situation, then when it came time to get tested put an economy tune and a low boost pulley and you would probably be ok. After testing put a the higher boost pulley back on. What about a turbo?
