383 Head Question...Curious as to what I would gain with Diff. Heads...

Hi all...

I've been enjoying my 383 LT1 for some time now, and am curious as to what types of gains are typical with for the below changes with my current set up...

The 383 has all the goodies excepts for the top of the line Heads... I do however have a set of LT1 stock heads that have been ported but not much...

If I went to an AFR 210 or 220 setup (comp. ready) ... how much should I expect to gain over my current 404 rwhp and 427 rwtq ?

I can supply a dyno graph and cam size if needed...

Thanks,
TDOG

This should be discussed in a engine tech forum. Transfering to LT1 Tech, thanks.

As it looks like you already know, a lot will depend on the cam and indeed, on the whole setup. But there are plenty of M6 383 LT1's with 450rwhp if that's any indication.

Do you have any idea what size cam and type of heads they're running?

Thanks,

Solid rollers, there's a number of good head porters. Most of the hi-po guys are running the larger versions of AFR's heads. The real hi-po guys run converted Gen I stuff.

What would you expect to pick up if going from stock heads with average port job to the AFR 220 Comp Ready Heads...

I know that there is no exact number...but would you expect to see about 20rwhp and 15rwtq...

Just ideas?

I would expect the gains to be greater than 20, probably more in the 30-35 range. Warmed over stockers are no match for 220 AFRs. But as Rich mentioned, it depends on the whole combo.

I would think the 220's would flow considerably more than the stock heads even after porting...

You can take a set of AFR 227 and the right set up and make in excess of 635FWHP.

Or a converted 15,18º head and do the same at a lot less rpm.

I think all the AFR heads are probably built around the same casting. So taking a 195 cc head and opening it to say 210 cc could very well yield a better port than just buying a 210. If you can find a guy who really knows head porting, it's not uncommon for the smaller head, ported to "like" port volume, to flow a bit more air. Granted, it costs a bit more doing it this way.

So...
Is this a yes...possibly...maybe...

That I could see 20 or so more RWHP with a change from stock, ported heads to AFR 195, 210 or 220's with a port job...

Would this also change the torque... but only in the upward direction?

Just Curious..

Everything moves "up", that's the reality behind building a higher hp normally aspirated engine. You can't seperate torque and horsepower... you just move their peaks higher. Some people, not pointing fingers, have a hard time understanding this.

Yes, you should see 20rwhp if not more from the swap.... if you don't run into other problems as a result of the swap. That sometimes happens.
