Compare apples to apples though.
If you had some AI'd AFR's you probably wouldn't be running the same cam as you would with ported stockers if the goal is to make the most out of each combo.
As for the cost, the higher you go in power, the more it costs to eek out each additional pony.

I would not do a 383 again, if I were to use ported stock castings. With the minimum CSA that is possible in a stock LT1 head, and 383ci, you are limited to a 6000-6100rpm peak. Whereas the same minimum CSA in a 355 will be good for 6400-6500rpm peak, which is ideal for using a stock PCM, IMHO. The added torque of the 383 is nice, but the 355 could be faster down the track because it will be better on the top end, where you spend 95% of the race.
