383 block prep

Exactly what machine work needs to be done to prepare a LT1 bare block for a 383 rotating assembly? Thanks!

Why are you asking? Curiousity, or do want a DIY guide?

How much power? How well do you want it done?

IMHO The list is:

Magnaflux and Inspect for Cracks
Oil Prep
Clean (either sand, shot or chemical)
Clearance for 383 or 396
Paint
Install 4 Bolt Main Caps
Line Bore and Hone
Bore and TQ Plate Hone (need pistons for this step)
Zero Deck

You can get away with less but that's the standard treatment.

When I talk to a builder or investigate the purchase of a prepped block, I want to know exactly what to ask about/ look for. I want to be a well-informed consumer!
Thanks!

With engine builders you really want to know how good of machining they do and the tolerances they look for. How they go about what they do is also important. How they measure piston to wall clearance, how they measure deck height for zero decking the block.

I should also have included a final cleaning and cam bearing install in that last post.
