383 and 454 engine swap questions.....

i have a 93 z28 with 59k on it and am looking at selling my motor and putting in a crate motor, specifically one of the following

383 SWAP
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...907923995&rd=1

454 SWAP
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...sPageName=WDVW

i have someone that will do this swap for 400 bucks, what else will i need to buy to make this work... headers?, trans? water pump, ect.... and anyone got a idea on how much money i am looking to spend of everything not including the price of the motor or install???

Considering neither of those will bolt in and work with your car, you're going to need a LOT of parts to make them work.

because fitting a 383 or a 454 under the hood is a little more realistic than a 572 and also just a bit more steetable..

Wink

A 454 BB and a 572 are the same physical size . About 18K should get it done depending on the price paid for 572CI BB

There are several BB cars done here and the only problem is they are FAST

A 454 SBC is to expensive to make run, because of heads to feed it and block.Rotating assy ain't cheap either.

BMR sells the k-member to do the swap.... that's a big part of the battle.

You can buy a 421/427/434 assembled short block for ~$4000. Check with Shafiroff and Speed-o-motive. I've seen long blocks from ~$7000 to whatever.... usually 575hp and up.

Pretty easy getting 650hp out of a 434 using a head like the Dart Pro-1 230cc... no shafts or special stuff needed. Of course big block strokers are getting cheaper all the time and something like a 540 can make over 800hp on pump gas all day long. So the choice is up to you.....

didnt realize how much acually went into putting the BB into a f-body, so that definetly out of the question, what would i need to run the 383 (the first link) in my car, how much fabrication and money would i be talking about with that setup? the reason i am not going with the lt1 rebuild is because right now i am figuring selling it for around $3000-3500, which i've seen them go for on ebay with miles as low as mine, and buying this 383 with the 470hp and practically breaking even with the motor, i have 4 grand on the side for everything else including the 400 dollar install (it is not a shop, just someone i know and is a mechanic for a dealership), is it possible to make the 383 work with the other $3600 for all the other parts??

Is this a street setup or a track car? As long as you are willing to work out the issues of the distributor being under the cowl (some people have had to cut out the wipers), the high-rise intake and huge carb requiring surgery on the cowl and a high-rise cowl type hood, interfacing the conventional flow SBC 1 engine with the reverse flow LT1 radiator, possible mismatch on the tranny boltup, etc. you can do whatever you want with the crate engine. "Streewise", it will never pass emissions and you will need to figure an interface for the VSS and speedometer, without the stock PCM. The carb will also require a different fuel system, and you would need to at least use another way to activate the pump, since the stock PCM wouldn't do it without the low res pulse pattern from the OptiSpark.

I'm familiar with a Dart Iron Eagle SBC 1 install in a 97 30th SS convert, and there are a number of issues to overcome, although its a lot easier if it only for the track. But that's a fuel injection setup, no distributor (MoTeC 8-channel direct fire ignition), and the intake and throttle body setup was low enough to fit under the stock SS hood.

$3000 for a used LT1 is robbery, personally I could not even ask such a price and keep a clear conscience, do not count on getting such a price. Granted there are fools out there who might pay it, but.............

have you been on ebay any time recently, 3 grand is low for a lt1 with under 60k on it, i just saw one the other day with 55k going for $4500, and i've seen plenty of them with a bit over 70k going for around $2500-$2900..... (keep in mind i am talking about the motor, trans, ecu and wiring harness for these prices)

thanks for the feedback, does anyone know if it would it be realistic to make this all work for $3600 or less?? ($3600 after the engine and labor). it is going to be primarly a track car, but will be driven on the street, not to worried about emissions none the less.

You must mean LS1 or a corvette lt1 maybe. Regular f body lt1's with motor/tranny and everything go for 2000 most of the time with low miles.

my big questions here is whether or not 4 grand would be enough for installation including parts, (i know for a fact that installtion though this person will not be over $600 because i know the person doing it)..... so assuming that he takes $600, does anyone know if $3400 will complete this project not including the price of a hood???

...Yea what he said. It just makes more sense unless one of your goals is to be different.
