383/396 owners...how does your combo run?

I'm trying to decide if going to a stroker will be a good decision. Some of the things I'm concerned about are driveability, emmissions, fuel economy (to a lesser extent),and reliability. I really am looking on improving on my (heads/cam) times from last year (12.01 @ 113.5) but without an unlimited budget, will have to choose my mods wisely. Help me out here guys...which stroker do you have (383 or 396)? What size cam? How quick is it and how is driveability? Thanks.

383

Scat 9000 crank
SRP pistons
Eagle H rods
Speed Pro File Fit Rings
XE 230/236
3200 stall TCS converter
1.6 rockers
Hooker Long Tubes
True Duals

Car drives like stock until you punch it and then screams like a banshee.

would a gmpp 846 cam be too small for a 383. What would be considered a good street cam without being too radical?

How about the crane 109841. I got that in my 383 imp SS, and it runs really well. Great street manors, but big enough to be noticable. I actually think its fairly close to the GM cam you listed, just with a lot more lift. Isnt it a 234/242 too?

I think the gm 846 has a duration of 222/230 . What is the lift on the cam you suggested atljar?

396 M6. 232/242 110 LSA. Pulls like a freight train past 3000 rpms. Wasn't built w/ 1/4 mile in mind though. Straight autobahn killer. 5-6K miles w/ out a issue other than I need a new fuel pump and high flow filter bad. Leans out up top stk pump can't handle it. Gets faster as the miles tack on too.
No 1/4 track times but my personal best in the 1/8th is 8.0 flat 91mph w/ a 2.30 60ft time on street tires and boggin off the line.

Mine is not properly set up. It never has been. I confirmed last night that my 02's have not functioned since the stroker was installed 1 1/2 years ago. Just deburred the valves, replaced the ignition control module whicj has been causing a miss for awhile now... Just opened up the exhaust a bit but it still isn't big enough for the combo.

There is nothing inexpensive about a stroker. The actual shortblock can be build reasonably, but when doing the work there are many things that come up that really should be dealt with properly.

Like you, I had already done heads and cam. I ordered a built stroker shortblock and waited for the original block to die. When it did we installed the stroker, did the 94 to 95 opti conversion, replaced the coil, rebuilt the transmission (more torque), cleaned out other things like the radiator, changed the belt, added larger injectors (I went with 30 pound but in hindsight I should have used 36 pound), has the PCM re-tuned to basic spec by Ed Wright, changed shifters... And countless other little things.

Also, if yourun NHRA tracks and drop below 11.99 you will need a roll bar and five point...

Just providing some food for thought.

Oh yea, 1/4 miles performance is in the sig... 1/8 mile best is 7.48 at 90 with a plugged up exhaust, 3600 stall converter, 3.73's and ET Streets with a 12 bolt rear and LPE driveshaft.

Thanks for the replies guys. One thing I'm wondering is, with the large cams you guys are using, what kind of mileage do you expect to get out of the valvesprings and how streetable are your cars? What about emmissions? What about highway mileage? I know fuel economy and performance really shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence but because this is going to be a street car that will be raced, instead of the other way around, I really am concerned about the whole package.
