383 12 to 1 compression and a stock starter

What starter are you guys using? The stocker? A CSI mini? I am concerned with heat soak with the 1 7/8 headers. They are ceramic coated which will help a bunch..any problems with the stocker?

I actually broke the cases of 3 stock starters until I went with an LT4 style and all has been well since, and I have the Kooks stepped LTs..Powermaster makes one that will also fit with the Kooks, but when I installed it, it would very slightly make contact with the flex plate only when in gear...It made a squeeksqueeksqueek sound no matter how I shimmed it...The LT4 has ben fine for almsot a year now...I'm 11.2:1...

What is the weight of your Formula, what is the RWHP number?

Got a part number for the LT4 starter?

Raceweight is 3650...rwhp is 400 on a dynojet 385 on a mustang, but thats before the true duals...I'm going back to make sure the a/f hasn't been changed too much with the better flowing pipes...

I don't know the LT4 part number, but its a starter for a 1996 Corvette at your local parts place...

Nice numbers for that weight, your converter must suck up alot. I am hoping to run 10.90 at that weight with my combo. All motor.

Thanks..I never really worried about the dyno numbers, just track mph..My goal was/is 10.90s on motor also, but I don't think my little cam can pull it off...Going to go to 4.10s from 3.73s to get me at 6300 at the end of the track...My only hope is to really get my 60's down...Still running stock shocks...we'll see in March..Good luck woth your set up..

Summit has a number of gear reduction light weight option I think you should look at if you decide to replace.

I have the original starter in my car from the L99, car has 170K on it and these days has an 11.5:1 LT1 with 230psi cranking compression and the starter is fine. The L99 did not even get the LT1's gear reduction starter so it is a step below what you have stock, think it is just a basic '80s type starter. Been starting the LT1 since 110k on the car and the current high compression since last spring.

I know it is not what you have but seems too me that if this works for me you should at least give your stocker a shot before replacing it.

I ran the stock starter on a 12.1 392 without problems....even using a small Dynabatt battery.

My stock starter (original i think too) is working flawless with my 11.2:1 383.

Is there really any difference between the LT1 and LT4 starters? I was wondering the same thing since mine is off right now and would be easy to replace.

Good to know, still wondering if there's any proof of a difference between the two starters. I highly doubt it.
