355supercharged or 383

just wondering what would be the better road . A supercharged 355 or a 383.
I have a 94z28 now that i will soon be doing the motor. The 383 would be more expensive to build so i would not supercharge.Any suggestions would be helpfull. Another question is what heads to use because there is not alot out there for the lt. I dont know how much horse could be made with the stock heads. How big of valves can be run in the stock heads.

I'm partial to the 383...There's plenty of power to be had with a set of ported stock heads..I use 2.00/1.56 valves in mine...Do a search and you'll find lots of combos...Mine has worked well for almost 12 years and it runs the numbers in my sig and has been daily driven, too...I would just add that if you plan on building it, build it right the first time and save for it...I have almost 12 years on my shortblock with zero issues...Its all about the right parts and attention to detail...

It all comes down to what your goals are for the car and how big of a budget you have...

the kits should be the same price unless you're reusing the stock bottom end...then i'd suggest going with the 383. if you're going all forged then i'd go with the 355. i'll have more potential than the 383 any day and it should last longer being blown.

i have a 383 now. i have stock ported heads and am looking into some tfs heads. i'm not satisfied with it...i'm thinking of stripping it down and going with a 355 blower setup. i'm looking into blowers now and if i get one then i'm definitely not putting it on a high compression 383. if i find a good deal on some heads then i'll keep it that much longer but i am going blown sooner or later

I'm leaning towards the blower, you can make some huge numbers pretty easily.

Do a 383, if your going to do the bottom end and make it bullet proof with the internals, there is no reason not to go with the extra stroke of the crankshaft. Look at it as inexpensive power under the curve.

If your looking for a Great deal on a 383 Shortblock call up Victory Racing Engines. They built me a Very nice Forged 383 shortblock for my LE AFR heads, D1SC setup.

Just read this, If that is the case between 355 Blower VS 383 N/A I would go blower. For the 355 just keep the stock heads through in a 22X 23X Blower cam using the stock crank with some nice pistons (Diamond, JE) with good rods and push around 10lbs of boost with a FMIC and make around 550RWHP. Then later you can upgrade the heads, headunit, CI size, etc

A 383 N/A setup would require some pretty nice heads (Probably around 2,000+, a Good Size cam to make (ABA383 has a small 226/234 cam which does well ) Really nice valvetrain, and all supporting components and your car will more than likely only make around 415RWHP.

I was planning on a 396 with my Bret Bauer Converted SuperVic, Big HR for the goal or 475-500RWHP and then spray it with 150-200 hit on a Perimeter Plate.Decided that was not going to be streetable and I am almost done with my Blower Motor now, which will have 650-700RWHP and be Plenty streetable, with the High gear ratio 3.23-3:42 gear, camshaft is a Small 22X/23X on a Wide LSA= low Overlap, and a small TQ converter. Something you can take women out in, lol

Something to think about, Decide on how much you have to drive the car, and do the mods that you feel are equivelant.

the only reason a 383 would be more is if you're planning on using the stock crank. otherwise, with equal parts, a 383 and 355 cost the same. equal parts being new crank, rods and pistons for either engine. if you want huge power i wouldn't stick with a stock crank anyway. i don't know how much it can handle but i doubt it would survive 500+hp reliably. build a lowish compression 383 i.e. 9.5:1 and supercharge THAT! use stock ported heads and intake to save some cash and still make crazy power. then a couple years down the road start looking at high dollar heads & intakes to keep the car a fun project. forged 355 $$$ = forged 383 $$$. think of it as free horsepower.

If you do a search, you will find similar questions asked a million times.

In short- it depends on what you want. The 383 won't really give you much more power than your 350 with the same H/C ect. It will give you a little hp, and a bit of torque. The supercharged 355 has a much higher potential for hp gains. It depends on how much you want to spend, and what power level you want.

A blower motor, + blower and parts to make it work will run you on average of $10,000, if not more. A 383 built with awesome parts will be much less.

I beg to differ with the highlighted statement...my 383 N/A set up made 455 on a set of 195 heads and not much bigger of a cam that u stated above. The heads only cost me 1600.
