3 cylinders dead

3 cylinders dead
So the shop put my Camaro on the scope today and 3 of the 8 aren't firing. Sounds like the opti to me, what do you guys think? He also says the crank position sensor is acting up, what symptoms would this cause? Would it make it difficult to start?

Lol, what does "acting up" mean? And also, try not to just point the finger at the opti like so many people do. It's expensive and it might not even be the problem. It's kinda hard to guess what it might be considering the only symptom you discribe is a missfire.

I don't know what he meant by acting up, I had to get off the phone. Believe me, I've been dealing with this for at least a month now and the opti is the last thing I want it to be. I've tried everything else that I can think of. I replaced the plugs, wires, a few sensors, what else can it be if three cyls arent getting spark?

If you are getting misfires, the crank sensor will detect them. If the misfires are random the crank sensor will appear to be random too.... Don't even be concerned with the crank sensor. The randomness is when it occurs not WHERE it occurs.
As far as the misfire. The problem must lie with the distribution side of the high voltage. It couldn't be the coil or the ICM since it occurs on the same 3 cylinders all the time. If those items were a problem, it would be random as far as which cylinders fire or misfire. IMO.
If the problem is indeed that those cylinders do not get spark, it must be either wires, plugs or distributor cap and rotor. If wires and plugs were already done, it's time for a new opti. Don't buy it from a dealer unless you pay the same as Dal for example. Also, it will get pricey if they install it as well.
If the water pump is old, best to replace it too. Doesn't make sense to have an old pump puke on a new opti. I highly suggest you view the vacuum hoses to the opti and be sure that they are hooked up the correct way after the opti is replaced.
