3.73 to 3.23 ?

I drive a 96 Z28 with some goodies on it that has me running 12:90 @ 108. Thats with 3.73 gears. Engine mods staying the same, if I were to down grade to 323's what kind of ET/trap loss would i suffer? Gas prices are a bi*ch in FL. Just curious?

Re: 3.73 to 3.23 ?

SOrry guys , the bearings , gears and everything are shot. Im thinking of dropping back down to 323's because of high gas prices. I just want to know how much 323's will slow me down seeing i run a 12:90 with 373's

I wouldn't think it would slow down your final time, just your acceleration. But then your top end power would be a little faster. So it's hard to say. Try it and let us know

Hmm, sounds good. I've never had 323's in my car so, the 323 feeling should be fun for those 45-50 mph roles.

How would the top end power be faster with a lower numerical gear?

The 323 feeling? I don't know what you guys are talking about? 373s will give you faster acceleration in any gear at any rpm, assuming you have traction...

Think of it like multiplication, and ignore the tranny (pretend 4th gear on an M6):

Engine RPM * Gear Ratio = Output RPM

Increase the gear ratio number, and you increase the speed at which your wheels spin per engine revolution. The faster your wheels spin, well, assuming traction, the faster you go!

Re: 3.73 to 3.23 ?

I think i only gained 3 or 4 tenths by swithing to 4.10s from 2.73s. Maybe you could make a comprimise and run 3.42s which are a good gear, they work great with n2o.

Well, if you have no traction with 3.73, you might go faster with 3.23, because you'll spend less time spinning your tires at the line... but if you can drive 3.73 at the track without wheelspin, then yeah, you'll probably lose at least few tenths with 3.23s.

Apparently there are some confirmed otherwise stock 5spd Mach1 Mustangs which switch to 4.11 rear end gears and slicks and run low 12's at the track (Launching at 6800rpm with no wheelspin). Granted, these guys must be great drivers, but that is impressive.

Note: I say apparently confirmed because I have yet to see this in person.
