3/4 turn to much preload for stock lifters?

Just curious I was reading the other thread about the comp r lifters where the cars ran like crap from running to much preload. Some people told me 1/2 turn but my haynes manual told me 3/4 turn, is this going to hurt performance at all?

Factory specs and manuals are going to be on the high side, just like the A/F is overly rich.

1/4 to 1/2 (preferably 1/2 is the recommended pre set.
