3 of 4 spark plugs black, 1 really clean??? what does it mean?
3 of 4 spark plugs black, 1 really clean??? what does it mean?
So i removed my driver side head today since i needed to get a couple of the threads redone for a mistake i did.
I took all the spark plugs, 3 are pretty black like they have been used a lot, but one is very clean, like it wasn't even put in the car.
It didn't seem like the car was misfiring or running bad, but i was wondering what that could mean.
That spark plug also had a loose end to it where the wire plugs onto.
I have had the SES light on for a while even after replacing the O2 sensors and everything else is pretty much new on the motor.
Ill have to check freescan to see what codes are being thrown when i get the head back on wednesday.
Im just trying to figure out why 1 spark plug would be really clean while the others look dirty, i mean it is a night and day difference between the dirty plugs and the clean plug.
thanks

ding ding Did it looked like it was being steam cleaned?
was the piston really clean too? Ya know what I am getting to ... dont you?
pretty much sounds like you had a minor head gasket failure.... I have seen a couple and oh by the way... the coolant always ruined the o2's.... wanna have that looked into before you add new ones.

thanks for the reply, ill update the situation later.
Re: 3 of 4 spark plugs black, 1 really clean??? what does it mean?
I would 2nd the analysis for a head gasket (the water cleans the combustion chamber) or your plug wire isn't working and you just got a bunch of fuel and air to clean your plug. Take your pick.

so i have been having a little smoke out of my exhaust, but i don't think the smoke is white.
i checked the piston of the spark plug that was clean and the piston is in the same shape as the other 3 around it.
ill get the car running on friday most likely and ill see what codes are being thrown since i got my aldl cable.
i put in a new head gasket today, new intake gaskets, made sure i used plenty of silicone on the intake manifold in the front and back, i also used thread sealant on all the head bolts.
only think left is to hook up the intake and the fuel injectors/fuel rail.
thanks for the input though, ill definitely update with the codes to see if any of them explain what might be wrong.
thanks
