2nd stage of the rebuild

I have a 96 lt1 short block.

I need to put everything back on the motor. i have all the TQ specs and bolt patterns. Now i need to know in what order to reassemble it.

cam-oilpan-timing assembly-heads??

basically want to confirm what im doing before i do it. i hate back tracking.

Also where do i need RTV and where do i not.

i know i need it on the water pump gasket. i know i don't need it on the valve cover gaskets.
i know i need it on the timing cover on the top of the gasket but
there are 2 pieces to the timing cover gasket a lower and a upper.
the lower piece contacts the rubber gasket on the oil pan. do i need rtv on both sides of that gasket or just the side with metal contact. Do i need to lay rtv on the oil pan gasket.

i have gaskets in this kit i don't know where they go

how do i replace the rear main gasket?
i know what the timing gaskets are for crank and cam.

Any help to this head ache would be appreciated.

Re: 2nd stage of the rebuild

You really should study the service manual. But here's a basic list of how i plan on putting my shortblock together.

Rear Main seal and housing, Cam, timing chain, timing cover, oil pan, oil level sensor, heads, lifters, lifter retainers, pushrods, roller rockers, valve covers, Optispark, hub, balancer, flywheel, prime oil, intake, install motor, fuel rail, radiator, water pump, hoses, fans, throttle body, vaccum lines, wiring, fill fluids, double check everything.

Off the top of my head you need RTV on the intake(front, back, and corners) and oil pan where it goes over the rear main seal housing and timing cover.
