Ok i am getting some 17x9.5 wheels in back and 17x8.5 in front.(Y2k vette wheels)

Tires will be Goodyear eagle f1 GS-D3

back tire size= 285/40/17

front size is where i need help. I notice for this tire there is a 245/35/17 and a 245/40/17......i want a light tire that is good for drag racing....but also good for every day driving. The 245/35/17 tire is also like 40 bucks cheaper and that is what i wanna go with if its ok. So can somene tell me what the difference is in these 2 tires and if ill be ok with going with the 245/35/17???

The problem with the sizes you are looking at it that they are a lot smaller in diameter than the stock tires. The 245/35-17 (23.7" diameter) is almost 2 full inches smaller in diameter than stock (25.65" diameter). That means the front of the car will be dropped 1" lower than the back of the car with the 285/40's. It also means the gap between the top of the tire and the wheel well will increase by a full one inch. Gonna make the tires look like little toys in the wheel opening, IMHO.

Even a 245/40-17 is one inch smaller than stock. A 235/40-17 is 1.3" smaller than stock.

You need a 245/45 to match the stock tire diameter.

Why would the front tire make me spin more? I'm getting 285's on back and would like lighter and smaller tires for up front.

ok couple more questions. I just looked and the back 285's are 26.1 inch in overall diameter...does that mean there is gonna be .45 of an inch less wheel gap?

I have ruled out the 235's up front and will probably go with 245/45/17 or 255/45/17.....the overall diameter on those 2 are
(25.7" for 245's) (26" for 255's) Which would be my better choice out of those 2?, would my car have a meaner stance if going with slightly smaller tires up front? Here is the spec page im using for these figures from tirerack.com if you wanna see em.
Tire specs click here

Thanks in advance for any help.

I concur.
Here are some crappy pictures of my 245/45s on 17x9.5s. Pic 1 Pic 2. Thats what I'd recommend, i'm very happy with them, until i get my Fiske 17x7s and 11s......... If you can, compare the 'rotations per mile'. It is much more accurate than the diameter in inches. There is a great deal of variance from manufacturer to manufacturer. The rim width also is a small contributing factor. In other words, 'they're close enough'.

No, it means that there will be ~ .2" less wheel gap, and your car will ride .2" lower. Thats diameter, so you need to divide it by 2 since radius determines the gap in the wheelwell, and the rideheight. .2" isn't very much, there will be more variance based on what manufacturer you select. You could also think of it as comparing a worn out tire to a new one. The 245s would work great. I'd look at a 235/50, but there are only two available types on tirerack. Definitly go for the 245s
