2014 Corvette will have an LT1???

I know this is a Camaro message board and maybe this isn't the best place to post this, but I just saw a 2014 Corvette Stingray promo and it states that the 2014 Corvette has a 450hp LT1. What gives with this? Anyone know? Same LT1 as our LT1?

No it's not even close to this ancient engine. It's just the third time the LT1 nomenclature was used. It's a 4th generation block based on the LSX structure.

You didn't honestly think that the new Corvette used a 21 year old dinosaur small-block, did you?

Could have checked it out in a thread on our "Automotive News......." forum back in October.

The new LT1 is being called a Gen 5. It's not an LSx engine and has little compatibility with it from what I have observed.

As shoebox said, the new LT1 is a Gen5 engine. It has very little in common with the Gen3 and Gen4 LS engines.

I can't help but wonder if this is a troll thread.

The block seems to be LSX and the bore centers are still 4.5 inches on center. There are many changes from the LTx: variable cam and valve timing, direct injection and cylander de- activation (with exhaust valve control when running fewer plugs), reworked pistons, modded ECM, reworked heads and they upped the compression. The headers are cast AL.

The block is not LS-based. It's entirely new.

...so are the heads and just about every other part. There is no interchangeability with the LSx. New 7 speed manual.

The building:
GM Video Portal - LT1 Build

The cool stuff:
GM Video Portal - Gen 5 LT1 Powertrain Tech Animation
VVT: Variable Valve Timing allows the lift, duration, or timing (in various combinations) of the intake and/or exhaust valves to be changed while the engine is in operation

As for why they called it an LT1:
There are many guesses.
"The original LT-1 was introduced in 1970...

Then in 1992 (22 years later) they introduced the 1992 LT1 with a revolutionary new system called Optispark ignition.

Now in 2014 (22 years later) they introduced the 2014 LT1 with (for the history of SBC generations) a revolutionary new system called direct injection.

I see the pattern."

Personally, I love my 96 LT, and if i had the money i would think and buy just the LT. There are many haters of the LT1, but without the LT, there would not have been a LS series.

Re: 2014 Corvette will have an LT1???

The visual similarity to previous all Al V8's from Chevy castings is striking. It is a push rod engine with the same bore centers, it has 376 cubic inches, it has 6 bolted mains and two of them are similarly cross bolted, the casting weighs about the same and the exhaust ports are also evenly spaced. There are few inter-changeble parts because of the new technology worked into the base case. The LS series was a break through and this engine is an intelligent derivative that saves money in development and manufacture. The bore and stroke are similar to past engines.
Ford Boss Mustangs engineers spent the money to have quad overhead cams and get about the same horsepower from a smaller V8 (302 ci vs. 376 ci) with no push rods and a much higher red line.
