200 amp powermaster alternator....need new wires?

I'm going from my stock 140 amp alternator to a Powermaster 200 amp (part# 47805). Am I ok with my stock wiring or should I get something beefier? If so, any ideas where I could get the thicker stuff ?

Thanks in advance!

I would suggest upping and replacing the main 3 wires... Neg to Ground, Pos to Alt, and Pos to Car.

As for where to get the wire, Knukonceptz.com has awesome deals on large gauge wire.

I'm running a large stereo system with mine, so I have 00 run for the main 3, plus the run to the amps. But for your application I'd say 4Ga should be plenty. Or for the wire and ends, check your local car stereo install shops, all of them buy the wire by the 1000' roll.

Re: 200 amp powermaster alternator....need new wires?

Great ideas! I didn't even think about checking with the local stereo shops. All I have as far as extra draw on my system is a mild stereo (amp and one 12" sub). I can't remember the exact power specs for the amp, but like I said, nothing radical at all. I'm torn between going back with a 140amp alternator vs. getting the Powermaster 200amp. What do you think? It's a little hard for me to justify the price tag of the 200amp with nothing that really demands it right now, but would hate to be borderline if I got more stereo or anything else later on.

Re: 200 amp powermaster alternator....need new wires?

There is a guy on LS1tech.com that gave me a # to a shop in Kentucky that re-builds alt's and starters.
I called them and he quoted me $189 for a 200 amp alt. and $129 for him to re-build it.
I will try and find the #

the stock alternator is a 140A... so if you're looking to upgrade, the 200A is about your only choice (With a few exceptions).

Do some voltage drop tests and see what's up. Or you can just order these I have them on my ta and they're excellent quality.
