Yea they suck. I traded in my old truck evenly for the Z28 and even then, the CAI, Hooker CB, and my now-on-order MAC headers is all I can afford. So she'll stay that way until I graduate about 3 yrs from now. Greenville? I'm only 40 min south of there in Central(I go to Clemson). Should've come by man, these people around here know how to have a good time.

Rich, do you think there is any way to "fudge" some numbers in order to get at least a close representation of the 2.73 vs 3.23 graph? Maybe some timeslips or something? I would like to see a graph like this, then maybe a computer program could be made to help drivers select the "correct" ratio for their goals(like 3.42s, 4.10s, etc.). My brother is a computer engineer, so maybe he could do it. This could get interesting

I could get the data for torque v. rpm. If one knew how to use Excell you could pretty easily make up a spreadsheet to do the calculations. The only data needed would be weight, torque v. rpm and the gear ratios and tire size. The calculation would not account for wheelspin though.

on the graphing subject...
back in the summer the only track i had ran my car at was an 1/8 mile track, so i graphed the velocity and then used a little calculus to estimate the 1/4 mile times. my car was bone stock at the time and i am not the quickest shifter so i estimated with in +- .1 seconds. that estimate predicted i would run a 14.3, so +- one tenth said i would run between 14.2 and 14.4 seconds...i was hoping for low 14's but i ended up running a 14.38
so if someone has the knowledge i'm sure you could easily figure up which gears you should be running. i know my example didn't have anything to do with the gearing but it did show that with the right math you can approximate anything, therefore approximate the "best" gearing...but like mentioned before, you really can't figure in spinning tires, so that's why it's kinda a rough estimate.
it would be interesting if someone did a little homework on the subject.

I spent pretty much all this past semester in ENGR 120 working with Excel spreadsheets (mainly for physics principles and fluid flow calculations). You might have to coach me through the calculations, but I should be able to write the formulas in Excel notation and plot it. I guess we'll just have to assume that slicks are the tires in use, so no wheelspin is present.

Yeah the 2.73's definitely make for good highway cruising. Nothing like strolling along at 85 or so and the motor only turning around 2300 or so. My Jeep with 3.73's turns around 2300 going about 75 .

i raced a 96 z with my 95 formula he had 3:42's i have the 2:73's... he was good handleing his traction problem and pulled a good 10 or so feet in front of me at the end of the 60 foot i thought i was toast... but man... once i hit about 65 the ****er pulled like a tracker trailor and with the blink of an eye the needle dropped to 96 and shifted pulled a car length in front of him... at the trap my friends say his bumper was equal to back of my door/ rear fender... hope he enjoyed the 1500 he spent on those 3:42's ; ]

I don't see how so many 3.73 A4 guys have gotten better times than with their stock gearing if your 3.42 friend lost to you over 65mph. I too would like to know if your friend's car was stock except for the 3.42's.

the cars were almost exactly evenly matched... MAYBE his exhaust is a little free'er than mine... but no real difference... i didn't head him at 65... 65 is when my car really starts to take off.. we were prolly nose to nose at about 83-88mph (this is a guess) all i remember is when it shifted (consistantly 95-96mph at WOT).. a sun gleam from his front licence plate got me in the eye (his plate is bent from an extremely minor fender bender...) guess that was luck!

i went from 2.73's to 3.42's and gained almost 3 mph and 3/10 ths over my best and average in nearly identical weather

the car would only chirp into 2nd and now i have a traction prob into 2nd

+ the car pulls harder from 45 to 60 and from 80 till my top speed limiter

Well besides the Flowmaster I am going to leave my car alone so I can run it near stock my first couple of times at the track.
