Question 1997 z28 new engine(question)

I'm looking into buying a 383 stroker engine for my 1997 z28 camaro.

Here is the link ive been looking at http://www.golenengineservice.com/sp...l/lt383sb.html or http://www.golenengineservice.com/ht...4.html#LTshort

other suggested sites would be nice aswell, looking to keep it around 3k though.

my question is with this new engine do I need to get my computer reprogrammed with the engine?

ty, Brad

At all costs should you avoid a Golen 383 with a cast Eagle crank. They have far too many failures lately, which I have seen first-hand.

My suggestion is to take your block to a reputable shop locally. That way you can keep an eye on the build process and follow up with the shop if there are any issues in the future. It's a smarter way of going about it, IMO.

What are you doing for cylinder heads and valvetrain, bolt-ons, etc.? 383s need ported heads and a cam with lots of duration and lift which will undoubtedly need programming.

Is your 3k limit for the short-block only? Because with the proper heads and cam you can double that to 6k, easy.

What are your goals? For what you're looking to do (and with your budget), you may not need a 383...

I purchased a forged Eagle assy from Summit. $2K for a balanced assy with -5cc pistons and 6" rod. Callies wanted $3k. Found a block @ local builder for $600. He said he does not like Eagle since their tollerances are not held close for hi-perf apps. Looks like my crank was OK after a measurment. The LT1 383 block was clearanced and had billet steel mains with 4-bolt caps. So, I purchased. I also purchased the tools to do the install myself for $200+(from Summit). He wanted $300 for assy install and $75 for file fit rings.

It's nice to have a complete short block (my blown 383 short was $5k), but, I wanted to do this one myself.

I do my own PCM flash with LT1_edit ver_2.2. I'm thinkin of doing 12:1 with Evans cooling NPG on the street. What the h*ll.

Reason Callies is more because they are way better than eagle. Also, I would get every rotating assembly balanced before install even if they claim it is balanced.
