1997 Tune up Questions

I recently had my car (97 Z-28, A4) in for a coolant flush and the mechanic mentioned that I need a tune up. I asked him to give me a quote. He quoted $1500 for gm parts and $1100 using parts ordered through summit. He said the tuneup includes: plugs & wires, cap & rotor, and water pump. He said I should replace the pump as long as the car is apart. What he doesn't know is the pump was replaced about 4 years ago. Am I getting scammed here? Do I need the waterpump replaced? anything else that should be included in the tuneup?
Thanks
Brian

Re: 1997 Tune up Questions

Personally, I would avoid the dealer, their prices are always outrageous. He probably recommended doing the water pump for the simple fact that if the seal fails, then it will start pouring coolant directly onto the Opti located right beneath it increasing the chance of failure. Also, instead of doing the cap/rotor, I would just replace the whole Opti as the cap/rotor are not the only parts that wear out on it.

I would avoid the dealer. If you have time to read, everything you would need to know is here!

That is quite pricey. Just quickly doing the math in my head I think you're paying him like $100/hour. For very very basic work like this, that's excessive. That's even assuming he takes his time. If I was in a rush that could all be done in under 5 hours, and I'm really slow compared to a lot of the guys on here.

When I worked for the dealer in the past, the labor rate was a 110.00 per hour and was supposed to go up, but I was laid off so I never knew if it did or not.

This quote is from an independent mechanic not a dealer. The $1500 dollar quote is using gm parts while the $1100 is using parts from summit. I think its b.s.

Re: 1997 Tune up Questions

Well glancing through the Summit catalog, you can get a brand new waterpump for under 300, a brand new Optispark for under 300, and plugs and wires for under a 100. Maybe a fuel filter, air filter, and pcv valve on top of that which will run around another 30 bucks. I don't know where he is getting 1100 from. I would get a second opinion.
