Question 1991 RS > 95' LT1 swap

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum. I've searched through several times and still have not really found anything relevant to my needs. I have a 91' RS with a good running 305. A friend of mine yanked a LT1 out of a Police interceptor Caprice... He claims it has 330 HP (Cast Iron heads), but anyways I got EVERYTHING that was in the engine compartment of that Caprice (block, heads, wiring harness, intake, computer, etc + 4.11 gears) for $200. My plan is to build a 383 Stroker with an LT4 hot cam and such, but I'm not sure if it's worth doing the swap into my Camaro. due to it's good-running originality. I need some opinions on whether I should find (my dream car) the shell of a 69' base Camaro or go for the swap. I'm only 16, I'm new to this but I'm learning as I go along. I do not plan to have a 500HP LT1 in my hands with my experience anytime soon at my age. So my question is: Should I build the LT1 and swap it into my Camaro, Build it then put it into another Camaro, or sell the LT1 and just throw some bolt-ons onto my 305? (I'm looking for an HP range of 300-350 to the rear wheels, or a good 7.5-8 1/8th mile time) And one more thing, will the T5 hold up to the LT1? Thanks.

I have a good friend who put a LT1 in a 91 RS and maybe I can get him to drop in and offer some info.

Far as the rest of the post the b-body LT1 was 260hp/330tq wether it was in a squad car or grandpa's Roadmaster.
The 9C1(cop car SPID code) got the 8.5" axle so the 4.11s out of one will not fit your 7.5" axle.
You do not want a HOT cam in a stroker.
7.5-8 in the eighth is doable with heads and cam on the stock shortblock LT1, my Caprice with heads/cam stock shortblock runs 7.5-7.8, so no need for you to build a stroker consider a rebearing of the motor and then the ported heads and a cam.

I'm not positive, but I don't think a T-5 will bolt up to a LT1. Something having to do with an input shaft difference. A friend of mine used a T-56 in his GTA and had to get an adapter plate for the tranny.
Swaping in a different style engine is kind of a large undertaking. I've always been conservative with these kinds of things so if it were me I'd sell the LT1 and get a good running 350 to throw in there. I don't believe the iron head LT1 was rated anywhere close to 330hp.

I would build the motor, and swap it into a 69 body/frame
get a t-56 tranny, maybe even a 700r4 if you want automatic.
othewise, a LT1 in your 3rd gen will still be a lot more power/fun than your 305.

a t5 will bolt up . an lt1 has a standard bellhousing bolt pattern. You can probably get close to 350 whp with the hot cam kit on your stock engine no stroker needed I'm not sure how much work it is to get the hotcam springs to work on iron heads but it shouldn't be too bad. You will need a good tune to reach 350whp. Also headers and a good cold air intake. and all bolt ons.
I say put it in the car it's not that hard.
Hope this helps.

+1 A good running 350 is a relatively painless swap when compaired to the lt1. I think that for a the amount of work it would be better to do a cheap, strong 350.

You will need to use the t5 clutch/flywheel ect but it will bolt up. If you were to try and bolt up an ls1 t56 the input shaft is different. but lt1/lt1 trannys will bolt up to 1st gen smallblocks and vise versa.
Hope this helps.

Go over to www.thirdgen.org and register if you already aren't, and look up the engine swap faq's and the engine swap forum. You'll find everything you need to know to swap in that motor. If you're RS is a good running car [no major problems mechanically, chassis, body, interior] and you plan on keeping it a while, I would swap the LT1 in to it. Why sell a perfectly good car?

Here's two long posts about swapping in a LT1, should get you in the right direction.

If you do end up swapping the motor, try finding a set of used aluminum heads from an F-Body or Corvette.

Thanks for the help guys! I was curious, If I do end up selling the LT1, is there a certain year 350 I should keep my eyes out for? Is there a certain set of heads I should look for a 350 block if I end up just buying a block? What kind of cam should go with it? (I'm lookin' for a nice big cam with that real lopey muscle car sound with good bottom-mid range torque). Also should I go carb or throttle body?

I would look for an 87+ 350, they were all rollers after 87, I am pretty sure. And if you mean carb or TBI, def go carb.

Good news... A friend of my friend is interested in my LT1 and is willing to pay around $1,000... Even though I payed $200 bucks for it (He had to pay his truck payment lol). I'm currently lookin' for a 350 block, can anyone suggest some Heads that would best suit me? I plan to spend anywhere from $1000-$1500 to build it... Also would a TPI unit fit on Vortec heads?

Whats amazing is that any 1 peice rear main seal SBC flywheel will bolt to an LT1 , wether it was behind a 305 or 350 (TPI,TBI or carb).

My car right now is using the flexplate of an 87 GTAs 305 TPI !!!!!!!!!
