190k LT1 ticking on startup, adjust valves or leave alone?

My poor ol 190k engine has a ticking on startup. Once she is the slight bit warm, the ticking goes away. Since, I am assuming it is all stock, the lifters are worn down beyond thier normal clearance? Either way, should I leave sleeping dogs lay or go in and try adjusting them tighter?

As of now, she runs like a bancshee up to 5k quiet as can be when warm.

Its definitly a lifter. I have slap on my cherokee but on the car its right up top under the valve cover in the middle.

That would be a lifter that has well served it's useful life at 190K. Look at it this way. you need to swap your cam, you have lifters that need replacement... nows a good time to make the best of it.

ugh............then, since I did all that, there is bearings and oil pump, hell, might as well do rings too, which means pulling the head! I know, these things should be done, but......... I am getting cold, so very cold.....

Stop whinning ... If you dont want to do all the work, then just put the lifters in and call it a day. Should cost you about 150$ for parts/gaskets ...

With that many miles though, even with it apart, I wouldnt cam it or anything like that. But some do ...

Well, it all started with an opti change only to drive her till she died, as it is bucking and acting up. Then, I thought, hmm, new opti conversion. Then, I find I need a cam for that. Then, which I kinda agree, someone said replace the lifters. Now, someone is gonna say replace the cam in there. Well, thats so close to a rebuild, might as well do bearings and an oil pump, right? Hmm, only thing that is left is a ring job. Its just snowballing too much.

I think I just might go with a non vented opti, Accel cap and rotor, seal the hell out of it, sell the cap and rotor and call it a day. This 1k camaro is turning out to be not 1k.

Oh, should I adjust the lifters or let sleeping dogs lay?

WHAT! You got it for 1K ?

Hahah thats awesome.

I say do a budget rebuild on it then with the stock crank, stock rods, GOOD forged pistons and Clevite bearings.

Then spray the **** out of it. Best bang for your buck. You could be in 12's for real cheap if you wanted.

If you have the money....rebuild it as stated above. If not then I would just make sure your oil level is good and leave it alone. Replacing lifters isn't hard at all, maybe a 2 hour job, but on a 190K engine I don't think it's worth it. Drive it as normal and buy the parts you want to rebuild it with so when it craps out eventually you will have less down time.

Thanks, but, actually it was 1,080 for the car, and two good a** reamings. One by NY's finest 3am patrol and the second was all the NJ tolls raping me for 3 axles going up and 4 axles coming back. Driving through brooklyn god knows where without a map in the middle of the night with no cash and 1/4 tank of gas 300miles away from home...........priceless! I figure when all was said and done, it was about $1,350 for the car, lol.

Hey, you all told me I was whacked for getting a $10k car, so, I listened

I dont mind doing all that, but, for some reason, I am scared to touch the heads (wich would leave out pistons and rings), I dont know why.

Adjust them and drive it. Try to notice with it running and no valve covers if all the valves are moving the same. If ya got a bad cam then ya will see one or more not move as far or fast as the rest, kinda looks like slow motion.
Drive it and get your moneys worth out of it if the cam seems OK.

Thanks racerdude, thats what I am thinking of doing now. Besides the hidden rust, which is okay for now cause it is hidden, and a few silly things like door lock switch broke and fog light cracked, it is a really sweet running machine. Well, once I get that opti fixed, but I guess thats why I got it so cheap
