You won't get the full cooling effect without a PCM reprogram, or manual switch. The coolant will flow out of the stat at 160 degrees but the cooling fans won't trigger until around 195 or 210. When accelerating on a freeway or open road there's more air being pushed through the radiator which will cool more with a 160 stat. However, to get a constant 160 temp you need to have the PCM reprogrammed.

Some people initially run hot after the install because they don't get all the air out of the system. Otherwise there is no problem. A fan switch is not mandatory. Having the fan ON temps reprogrammed like norcalstreet said, helps keep temp down at all times.
