Question 160* and bypass ok in the winter

So many people recommends the throttle body coolant bypass mod, but is there a noticable detrament in the winter weather? Am I going to kick myself in the a$$ monday morning when I am fighting to get it warmed up like one of my carburated cars, or is it even a factor?

Also does any one run a 160* thermostat in the winter? Not extemely cold here in kansas, but 15-30 seems to be the usual morning temps. Any problems there either?

Since I have to bleed the coolant system tomorrow anyway am thinking about doing some cheap/free stuff.

Neither one of those mods are ideal for cold weather. I forgot why though maybe someone else could tell you.

The bypass will have nothing to do with your heat and the 160 will have little effect.

If it were that cold over there then i would just go ahead and use the 180* during the winter and the 160* stat during the summer. At those temps the car shouldn't run very hot anyways. But i'm can't tell you for sure since i don't live anywhere where the temps get that low.

Ive got 160* thermo and tb bypass and its usally about 20 here in the mornings, it takes it a lil while to warm up, but once it does its fine, id give it 5-10mins to warm up prob.

The bypass won't hurt anything. I swap the 180 back in during the coldest months of the winter. I would say for Kansas winter weather, you would be happier with the 180.

i have had the 160* and TB bypass for about a year and a half and never had a problem even when i go to upstate NY where it is like 5- 10* at night. It just takes longer to warm up.

As long as you have your fans reprogrammed when you put in a 160 thermostat, you don't have to worry. Same on the TB bypass (which a number of people have already said), but of course there is no need to reprogram anything for that. The only time you might have a problem is if you don't reprogram your PCM, your fans will run constantly and you might end up running too cold. I drove my car around last winter with a 160 thermo (reprogrammed fan settings) and TB bypass, didn't have any problems. The only thing I noticed was it takes longer for the heater to get hot (so no FlyBono24, you aren't alone!). It gets down to -10F and lower here somtimes too.

I live in KS and I've had a 160 thermostat & t/b coolant bypass on my LT1 Camaro for 5 years now, still runs great, and only problem is it takes a while for it to heat up & the heater doesn't blow as hot (probably because during the coldest periods, the temp doesn't go over 140-150... )

Great stuff...so I guess Im up for the bypass today, and waiting for the 160*. Aside from slow heating up, my heater/a/c is not working anyway (only lighty blows from lower vents, and defrost) so I guess Im looking for vacuum leaks today also.)

Thanks for the input everyone
